The Queen's College and the Faculty of Oriental Studies

BARNS AND GRIFFITH JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN EGYPTOLOGY

The Governing Body of The Queen's College and the Faculty of Oriental Studies propose to elect to a Barns and Griffith Junior Research Fellowship in Egyptology. Candidates may apply whose field of research is in any area of Egyptology that studies the linguistic, cultural, and/or archaeological legacy of Egyptian civilization, within the time-span from the Naqada II period to Christian Egypt. Subjects relating to Egypt for which the principal ancient linguistic sources are in languages other than Egyptian and/or Coptic are excluded, as is the cultural and archaeological legacy of ancient Alexandria. The successful candidate will enter upon the Fellowship on 1 October 2000.

The basic stipend of the Fellowship, which is pensionable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme, is £12,616, subject to adjustment in the light of any other emoluments enjoyed by the Fellow, or in the light of any general alteration to University stipends. The Fellowship will be tenable for three years and will not be renewable. The Fellow will be entitled to free meals in College, but will not normally be allocated rooms in College; however a housing allowance of £2,424 will be paid in lieu. The Fellow may engage in teaching in Oxford up to a maximum of six hours a week. Separate remuneration may be available for such teaching. The Fellow will be a member of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

Candidates must by 1 October 2000 have passed all the examinations required for a first degree at Oxford or another university, and must not have accumulated more than ten years in full-time graduate study or research (not necessarily continuous).
