Computer Science Tripos and Diploma in Computer Science, 2000: Notice

The Computer Science Syndicate give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2000, the form of the examinations for the Computer Science Tripos and the Diploma in Computer Science will be changed as follows:

Computer Science Tripos
Part Ia

Paper 1

This paper will be divided into five sections. Section A will contain four questions, one on each of the following subjects: Foundations of Computer Science, Discrete Mathematics, Java, and Operating Systems. Section B will contain two questions on Foundations of Computer Science. Section C will contain two questions on Discrete Mathematics. Section D will contain two questions on Java. Section E will contain two questions on Operating Systems. Candidates will be expected to answer two questions from Section A, and one question from each of Sections B, C, D, and E. Each section will carry the same weight of marks.

Paper 2

This paper will be divided into four sections. Section A will contain one question which will be divided into several parts, and this question may draw on all Part IA Computer Science courses. Section B will contain two questions on Digital Electronics. Section C will contain two questions on Probability. Section D will contain five questions which will cover material taken from the courses on Professional Practice and Ethics, Computer Perspectives, Regular Languages and Finite Automata, Software Engineering I, Software Engineering II, and Structured Hardware Design. Candidates will be expected to answer all parts of the question in Section A, one question from each of Sections B and C, and two questions from Section D. Sections A, B, and C will each carry the same weight of marks. Section D will carry twice the weight of marks of any one of the other sections.

Part Ib

Papers 3 and 4

These papers will not be divided into sections. Each paper will contain ten questions of which candidates will be expected to answer five.

Papers 5 and 6

These papers will each be divided into three sections, each section containing four questions. In each paper candidates will be expected to answer five questions, with not more than two questions answered from any one section.

Part II

Papers 7, 8, and 9

These papers will not be divided into sections. Each paper will contain thirteen questions of which candidates will be expected to answer five.

Dissertation

The dissertation will carry a weight of approximately one quarter of the marks given to the entire examination.

Part II (General)

Papers 10, 11, 12, and 13

These papers will not be divided into sections. Each paper will contain thirteen questions of which candidates will be expected to answer five.

Diploma in Computer Science

Papers 1, 2, 3, and 4

These papers will not be divided into sections. Each paper will contain thirteen questions of which candidates will be expected to answer five.

Dissertation

The dissertation will carry a weight of approximately one third of the marks given to the entire examination.
