Vacancies in the University

The University is committed to equality of opportunity and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

UNIVERSITY OFFICES

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry

Applications from persons with outstanding research programmes and enthusiasm for teaching are invited for the office of University Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry. The Department has particular research strengths in Structural Biology, Enzymology, Protein Chemistry, Protein Synthesis, Molecular Neurobiology, Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbial Biochemistry, and Cardiovascular Biology. We are hoping to develop and extend these strengths. The appointment will also carry undergraduate teaching responsibilities in both the Natural Sciences Tripos (years one to four) and the Medical and Veterinary Sciences (years one to two).

Applications (two copies of a curriculum vitae, the application form, a list of publications, a summary of teaching interests and experience, an outline of the research programme to be followed, and the names and addresses of not more than three referees) should be sent to the Head of Department, Professor Sir Tom Blundell, FRS, Department of Biochemistry, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge, CB2 1GA, so as to reach him by 3 December 1999.

Further details of the appointment may be obtained from the School of Biological Sciences' website (http://www.bio.cam.ac.uk/sbs/appointments/), or from Mrs Irene Kightley, Head of Department's Secretary (tel. 01223 333629, e-mail igk20@mole.bio.cam.ac.uk). Information about the Department's research and teaching activities is available from the Department of Biochemistry's website (http://www.bio.cam.ac.uk/dept/biochem/).

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Geography and the Scott Polar Research Institute

Applications are invited for a University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer, to take up appointment from 1 March 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter, in the Department of Geography, associated with the Scott Polar Research Institute. Applicants with interests in issues of environment and development in polar regions - the geography, economics, social implications, politics, or policies of resource exploitation and management in the Arctic and/or the Antarctic, will be particularly welcome. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute a high level of research activity; to teach at undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D. levels; and to develop the M.Phil. Degree in Polar Studies, and graduate training in particular.

Further particulars may be obtained from Professor K. S. Richards, Director, Scott Polar Research Institute, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, CB2 1ER, to whom applications (eight copies) should also be sent by 26 November 1999.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Physics

Six University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Physics, to take up appointment on 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications are sought from all areas of Physics, but there is some preference for the following areas:

One or more posts in Experimental Particle Physics. For more information, contact Dr J. R. Carter (jrc1@hep.phy.cam.ac.uk).

One or more posts in Astrophysics, with specialization in millimetre wave astronomy, or cosmic microwave background radiation studies, or optical interferometry. For more information, contact Professor R. E. Hills (richard@mrao.cam.ac.uk).

Up to four posts in the general area of Condensed Matter Physics. The areas of specialization may be in experimental, theoretical, or computational studies, or some combination of these. Applications are encouraged from those working in the areas of polymers and colloids, microelectronics, semiconductor physics, optoelectronics, magnetic and superconducting materials, biophysics, supercomputing, strongly interacting electron systems, and applied physics, particularly in the physics and chemistry of solids. For further information about the programme in Condensed Matter Physics, contact Professor M. S. Longair in the first instance (msl@mrao.cam.ac.uk).

Part of the Laboratory's strategy is to develop initiatives in nanoscale phenomena, which span many of the above areas in Condensed Matter Physics. The Laboratory will be prepared to consider the appointment of a package of Lecturers with complementary expertise within these disciplines. Nonetheless, the Department's policy is to select the best possible candidates from those who apply and these need not be from the priority areas.

More details of the current research and teaching programme of the Laboratory may be obtained from Professor M. S. Longair, Cavendish Laboratory, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0HE (e-mail msl@mrao.cam.ac.uk), and also from the Department's website (http://www.phy.cam.ac.uk/).

Applications (two copies), including a curriculum vitae, a statement (up to six pages) of research experience to date and of research plans for the future, and the names and addresses of three referees, should be sent by 7 January 2000 to Mr P. Aslin, Secretary of the Appointments Committee, Institute of Astronomy, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0HA.

OTHER POSTS

Director of the Cambridge Entrepreneurship Centre in the Judge Institute of Management Studies

Applications are invited for the new appointment of Director of the Cambridge Entrepreneurship Centre, which is part of the Judge Institute of Management Studies. The Centre is part of a major initiative of the University to support the successful exploitation of science and technology through innovation, knowledge transfer, and entrepreneurial activity. The Centre will be housed in its own building. The Director will report to the Chairman of the Centre's Executive Committee (Professor Sandra Dawson), and is expected to work in partnership with the Science and Engineering Faculties.

The Centre has three main activities. The first is teaching and training to support innovation and entrepreneurship at undergraduate and graduate levels in the University, as well as aspiring entrepreneurs and representatives of larger companies concerned to encourage entrepreneurial activities and attitudes within a corporate context. The second is advising and mentoring early-stage entrepreneurs in the commercial exploitation of innovative ideas. The third is the review and dissemination of knowledge on technology exploitation and innovation management, enabling the Centre to act as a conduit for disseminating best practice.

The Director will be responsible for the day to day operation of the Centre. The Director will be someone who can translate their 'vision' of entrepreneurship into a Centre for developing the practical side of starting and supporting new ventures. The Director will need to understand and demonstrate how the Centre can benefit the participants, the University, the Eastern Region, and wider goals of national economic growth and productivity. This individual will be someone who can establish good relationships between Cambridge academics and the commercial world. It is important to continue fund raising, and to establish good alumni and corporate relationships. A small but effective team of staff will be managed by a Programme Manager. The Executive Committee includes a core of three entrepreneurs, two 'entrepreneurial academics', and three academics representing science, technology, and management.

The position is unestablished and the pensionable stipend is negotiable.

Applications are to be sent to Mrs Shirley Jamieson, Joint Programme Manager, Cambridge Entrepreneurship Centre (Room 2.05), The Judge Institute of Management Studies, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1AG. (tel. 01223 339700). Ten copies of a curriculum vitae, with the names and addresses of two references, should arrive no later than 22 November 1999.
