Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the Faculty of Law

University Lecturer in International Law, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 or as agreed. The person appointed will be expected to teach in the area of International Law at undergraduate and postgraduate level, supervise research students, conduct research in one or more areas of International Law, and play a part in the general work of the Faculty. The person appointed will also be expected to play a part in the work of the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Faculty of Economics and Politics

Three or more University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in Economics, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applicants from any branch of Economics (broadly defined to include Econometrics and Economic History) are welcome to apply. The Faculty is particularly interested in people able to make a teaching contribution in Macroeconomics, Finance, or Industrial or International Economics. The successful candidates will be expected to provide some general Economics teaching at the undergraduate level, but will also have an opportunity to lecture on their particular fields of interest in the Faculty's graduate and undergraduate programmes.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Engineering and Judge Institute of Management Studies

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Information Systems. Candidates will be expected to have a demonstrated record of research in the field, and experience of industrial information systems in technical as well as managerial applications will be particularly welcome. The position is available immediately.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Operations Management. A demonstrated record of research in the field will be required, and candidates with strong industrial and/or applications experience will be particularly welcome. The position is available from January 2000.

These appointments will be held jointly between the Manufacturing and Management Division of the Department of Engineering and the Judge Institute of Management Studies. Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in any field of Pure Mathematics, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 or possibly earlier.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Slavonic Studies

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Slavonic Linguistics and Philology. The successful candidate will have either a record of research and publication in these areas, or clear evidence of potential publication in the relevant fields. He or she will be expected to teach existing papers in the History of the Russian Language and a Comparative paper on the Slavonic Languages, to supervise, when appropriate, Ph.D. students, to participate fully in undergraduate teaching of the Russian language at all levels, and to play an active role in the further development of the curriculum. The appointment will be from 1 September 2000.

Senior Technical Officer in the Department of Physics

Senior Technical Officer (Health and Safety Officer) in the Department of Physics, to take up appointment by 1 January 2000 or as soon as possible after that date. The person appointed will be responsible to the Head of Department for all aspects of Health and Safety arising in a large, experimental science department. Applicants should have Chartered Physicist status with a postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent qualifications and experience. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for further periods of five years, or to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Technical Officer is £20,811 a year, rising by nine annual increments to £30,065.

Temporary Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry

Applications are invited for the post of temporary Lecturer in Biochemistry, to be held in the Department of Biochemistry. The post is available from 1 March 2000, and the appointment will be for two years, during completion of the tenure by Dr Ernest Laue of a Merck Dupont Fellowship. The duties of the post will include contributions to undergraduate teaching in protein Biochemistry and the structure and function of membrane proteins. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in an independent programme of research in Biochemistry, preferably in the area of membrane protein structure, function, and dynamics, and will share laboratory space. The Department operates a no smoking policy. The salary will be in the range £20,811-£32,095.

Administrator (half-time) in the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology

Applications are invited for a half-time post of Administrator in the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The duties of the post are to provide administrative support for all aspects of the work of the Faculty, including serving as Secretary of the Faculty Board. Applicants should have relevant experience. The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, with the possibility of reappointment. The salary will be pro rata (50 per cent) on the full-time scale of £18,915 to £24,479 a year.

Research Assistant in the Department of Engineering

A position exists for a Research Assistant in Geoenvironmental Engineering, to work on a project investigating the long-term behaviour of cement-treated, contaminated ground. The project is funded by EPSRC. The aim of the project is to investigate physical and chemical properties of in-situ, soil-mixed, contaminated ground, at six years after treatment. The successful candidate will have a first degree in Engineering and preferably a Master's Degree in Geotechnical or Geoenvironmental Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in relevant laboratory testing and in contaminated land remediation.

The appointment will be for one year, starting as soon as possible. The salary is £16,286 a year.
