Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Medicine

Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Medicine, assigned to Clinical Pharmacology, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The person appointed will be of the standing required for an honorary contract of service with the NHS Executive Eastern Region as a Specialist Registrar and will be required to undertake clinical work, teaching, and research. Teaching will include acting as a Clinical Supervisor to a group of students. The appointment will be for four years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Clinical Lecturer is £23,300 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £40,285.

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lecturership is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy

University Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy. The Department seeks to appoint a person, with an outstanding research programme and an enthusiasm for teaching, starting on 1 October 2000. The Department has particular research strengths in Development, Neurobiology, Molecular Biology, and Imaging at cellular and tissue levels, and we are hoping to develop and extend these strengths. The appointment will also carry exciting teaching responsibilities in preclinical Medical or Veterinary Anatomy for which clinical experience would be an advantage, but not essential.

University Lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

This post is available from 1 January 2000. Applications are invited from candidates with very strong personal research records in combined experimental and theoretical approaches to problems in fluid mechanics and their study at model scale, to hold office in the DAMTP Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. The interests presently represented in the Laboratory span environmental, geophysical, and industrial flows, and attract very considerable grant income and much collaborative research. The post-holder will assume the duties of Director of the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, with responsibility for the general development of the Laboratory, and oversight of all aspects of the running of the Laboratory. Teaching duties are also required, the post-holder being expected to lecture in applied mathematics and fluid mechanics to students taking the Mathematical Tripos or the Natural Sciences Tripos.

University Lecturers in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine

Three University Lecturers in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, to take up post as soon as possible. Candidates should have a good research record and will be expected to develop programmes in areas related to the Department's existing clinical research strengths. University Lecturer in the Department of Pathology

The Appointments Committee for the Faculty of Biology wish to appoint a University Lecturer in Pathology to take up appointment in the Department of Pathology as soon as possible. The successful applicant will be based at Addenbrooke's Hospital. Applicants must hold a medical qualification, be Members or Fellows of the Royal College of Pathologists, or hold an equivalent qualification, and have fulfilled the requirement for inclusion on the Specialist Register in Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology. Proven ability in original research is essential, the theme of which is not proscribed but should be concordant with the existing interests in the Department of Pathology. The successful applicant will have clinical responsibilities within the Pathology Services of Addenbrooke's NHS Trust and will be recommended for an honorary consultant contract.

The pensionable stipend is equivalent to the NHS salary scale for consultants (£47,345-£61,605).

University Lecturer in the Department of Surgery

The Appointments Committee hope soon to be in a position to appoint to the above office. Applications are sought from candidates whose sub-speciality interest is transplant surgery. The successful applicant, who will be recommended for honorary consultant contracts with the Addenbrooke's NHS Trust, will be required to undertake teaching, research, and clinical work.

The successful candidate will be eligible to receive an additional payment for clinical responsibility related to the amount of clinical work undertaken. If, as expected, the Lecturer undertakes the equivalent of six or more NHS sessions a week of clinical work, the payment will be such as to bring his or her total pensionable emoluments into line with a point on the NHS salary scale for consultants (£47,345-£61,605).

Applications are invited in the following broad areas:

Geophysics, including marine geophysics, seismology, gravity, geomagnetism, tectonics, and planetary sciences, and in the application of physics to other fields of the Earth Sciences.

Environmental Chemistry/Geochemistry: we seek candidates in the whole range of fields such as global environmental change, biogeochemistry, palaeoceanography, and geochemical exchange between rocks, fluids, and the atmosphere.

One appointment will be at University Lecturer level and one at University Assistant Lecturer level.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Computational Solid Mechanics in the Mechanics, Materials, and Design Division in the Department of Engineering. The successful candidate will have a higher degree and an active record of excellence in research in the general field of computational solid mechanics. Expertise in one or more of the following areas will be an advantage: (i) numerically robust computational strategies for finite element and boundary element methods, (ii) computational modelling of static and dynamic problems in areas of applied mechanics such as micromechanics, process modelling, and tribology, (iii) coupled phenomena in phase transformations and/or active materials. The person appointed will be expected to play a full part in the teaching of the four-year undergraduate course leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees and in the supervision of graduate students. Appointment will be from 1 January 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Energy Technology, to take up appointment on 1 October 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter. The person appointed will be expected to play a part in the teaching of energy technology, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics in the Department. He or she will have a strong research record in an area relevant to the effective generation and use of energy. Priority will be given to the research areas of combustion, pollutant reduction, the thermodynamics of power generation, acoustics, or metallurgical MHD.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Thermo-fluids Engineering, to take up appointment on 1 April 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The person appointed will be expected to play a part in the teaching (particularly thermodynamics) of the four-year course leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees. He or she will have a strong research record within the general field of thermo-fluid dynamics, and a special interest relevant to the power generation industry in multi-phase flows, aerosol technology, pollutant formation, or chemically reacting flows.

Vacancies have arisen in the Faculty of History due to retirement or promotion. The Faculty seeks to make appointments to seven posts in the following areas: Medieval European History; British Economic and Social History; Modern European History; and Tudor History.

Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in Medieval European History, one in the period, c. 400-c. 1250, and the other in Northern, Central, or Eastern Europe, c. 1250-1500. Presentations and interviews will be on 20-21 October 1999.

Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in British Economic and Social History, one in British Economic and Social History, 1450-1750, and the other in eighteenth-century British History with a preference for cultural/social history. Presentations will be on 29 October and interviews on 1 November 1999.

Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in Modern European History in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For one post, preference may be given to candidates with a specialized research interest in Southern Europe. The other post is in Russian/Eastern European History. Presentations and interviews will be on 3-4 November 1999.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in British History in the Tudor period. Presentations will be on 12 November and interviews on 15 November 1999.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching of medieval Spanish at undergraduate level, to collaborate in the teaching of the M.Phil. in European literature, to supervise Ph.D. students, and to participate fully in the language teaching and first-year literature programme of the Department.

Director of Medical and Veterinary Education in the Faculty of Biology

Applications are invited for the newly-established office of Director of Medical and Veterinary Education in the Faculty of Biology. The specific duties of the Director will be determined by the General Board after consultation with the Faculty Board of Biology, but the Report on the establishment of the office (see Reporter, 1998-99, 26 May, p. 657) envisages that the Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of the decisions of the Faculty Board of Biology on those aspects of medical and veterinary education that fall within its remit, will undertake liaison with the Clinical Dean and the Dean of the Veterinary School to co-ordinate preclinical and clinical education, and will ensure that adequate liaison takes place with the Colleges and the Senior Tutors' Committee in relation to matters such as admissions and College teaching. The Director will be expected to work closely with the Faculty Board of Biology and its relevant committees to improve communication, to ensure that the Faculty Board of Biology is able to deal with issues in a timely and effective manner and is provided with the information needed to make decisions, and to see that the interests of cognate bodies, including the relevant professional organizations, are explored.

The office of Director will be held concurrently with another University office and at least fifty per cent of the officer's time will be devoted to the duties of the Director. The person appointed will be granted leave of absence on a part-time basis, without stipend, from his or her substantive office to enable him or her to fulfil the duties of the office of Director of Medical and Veterinary Education in the Faculty of Biology. The Director will not normally be permitted to hold a substantial College office such as Tutor, Bursar, or Steward.

The pensionable stipend will be pro rata to £35, 670 for a full-time post.

Technical Officer in the Department of Chemical Engineering

Technical Officer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, to take up appointment as soon as possible. A well-qualified Electronics Engineer is required to manage a small, but talented team, responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of advanced instrumentation and other electrical equipment for the Department's research and teaching. Familiarity with interfacing electronic equipment to computer data acquisition systems is essential, as an important aspect of the work is the development of systems for the collection of data, interpretation of results, and in the diagnosis of faults. Experience of working within the appropriate regulations governing the use of single and three phase electrical mains supplies is also required. Applicants should have a strong background in electronics, with appropriate qualifications to at least degree level. The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Technical Officer is £18,185 a year, rising by five annual increments to £22,579.

The Registry Division supports the University Council which is the chief executive and policy-making body of the University. The duties of the post will include acting as facilities manager for the Old Schools (including matters concerning safety and security), assisting with the work of Committees concerned with the health and welfare of staff and students, and assisting with the arrangements for sick and disabled examination candidates.

Director of Health and Safety

Applications are invited for the newly created post of Director of Health and Safety in the University of Cambridge, for appointment from 1 January 2000 or earlier if possible. The Director of Health and Safety will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for enhancing, promoting, and maintaining an effective health, safety, and environment management system. A higher degree in a relevant scientific discipline is desirable and experience within a research environment will be a requirement, as will previous experience in Health and Safety management. Locum Lecturer in Clinical Pathology

The Appointments Committee for the Faculty of Biology wishes to appoint a Locum Lecturer in Clinical Pathology, to take up appointment in the Department of Pathology as soon as possible. The post is available for an initial period of six months and will be based at Addenbrooke's Hospital. Applicants must hold a medical qualification, be Members or Fellows of the Royal College of Pathologists, or hold an equivalent qualification, and have fulfilled the requirement for inclusion on the Specialist Register in Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology. A specialist interest in neuropathology would be particularly welcome, but applications will also be appropriate from suitable candidates with general or other specialist histopathology experience. Aptitude in teaching is essential and experience in research desirable. The pensionable stipend is equivalent to the NHS salary scale for consultants (£47,345-£61,605 pro rata).

Service Manager in the School of Clinical Medicine IT Support Service

The Clinical School wishes to appoint a Computer Officer, Grade I, to manage its IT Support Service. The Service has recently been restructured so that information technology operations and the support of infrastructure is now the responsibility of the separate Service. The post-holder will be responsible for providing the systems and support offered by the Service and the relevant deployment of staff.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be of postdoctoral or senior management level, with an in-depth technical knowledge of IT systems based on experience with a range of different computer platforms. Experience of managing both computer networks and staff is essential, ideally in an academic or commercial environment. The post-holder should also possess the skills to write lucid technical reports and to communicate his or her ideas to senior academic staff. He or she should be prepared to take the lead for the School in identifying the direction of future developments in IT in the next five years. Two posts in the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, School of Clinical Medicine (WBIC)
