Jebb Fund: Notice

Statutes and Ordinances, 1999, pp. 655 and 722

The Jebb Electors give notice that:

(a) Two Jebb Studentships for advanced study, one of some subject in the field of European Literature from the time of the foundation of Constantinople to the birth of Dante, and the other of some subject in the field of European Literature from the time of the birth of Dante onwards, are offered for award annually. 'European Literature' includes works of literature written in the British Isles. Candidates must not have attained the age of twenty-six years on 17 April of the year of the award, and must be graduates of the University by the time when, if elected, they take up the Studentship. A Student is normally expected to become a Graduate Student of the University if not one already. A Student may be re-elected for a year at a time, subject to a maximum tenure of four years. The age limit does not apply to candidates for re-election.

The value of the Studentships will be determined by the Electors, taking account of any other financial resources available to the Student. The maximum stipend of the Studentship is at present £5,500.

The Electors may also make grants to Students for travel, and for other special needs (e.g. books and research expenses).

(b) One Jebb Scholarship will be offered for competition during the current academical year. The Scholar will be required to pursue a course of literary study and examination approved by the Electors, either in Greek and Latin, or in one of those languages in combination with English or with some other European language and literature. A Scholar will be required to become a member of the University, if not one already, normally as soon as possible after the announcement for honours in an appropriate Tripos Examination. In special cases the Electors may allow a Scholar to apply for admission as a Graduate Student.

Any person who has completed a course in Classics, or in Greek or Latin, together with some other European language and literature, is a graduate of one of the universities of the Commonwealth (excluding Great Britain and Northern Ireland), and has received a degree which has been approved by the Council under Regulation 1 for Affiliated Students, is eligible for the Scholarship provided that he or she is nominated by the Head of the Institution of which he or she is a graduate.

The Scholarship is tenable in the first instance for two years from 1 October of the year of the award. A Scholar may be re-elected, subject to a maximum tenure of four years. The annual emolument will be determined by the Electors; the maximum value at present is £5,500, the same value as the Studentship. The Electors may also make grants to Scholars for travel, and for other special needs (e.g. books and research expenses).

(c) The Electors will receive applications for grants from persons engaged in study or research in the University in classical or other literary studies, and, in particular, to those who require financial assistance in publishing research papers in these fields of study.

Applications for studentships, scholarships and grants must be made on forms obtainable from the University Registry, The Old Schools, Cambridge, CB2 1TN. Applications should be sent to the Registrary, at the same address, to reach him by 1 May annually. The elections and grants made will be known by the end of the Easter Term each year.
