The Leverhulme Trustees, through their Research Awards Advisory Committee, offer annually approximately 120 fellowships and grants to individuals in aid of original research. These awards are not available simply as replacement for past support from other sources.

Eligible applicants: Awards are not limited to university graduates but applicants should be experienced researchers, particularly those who are or have been prevented by routine duties or like cause from undertaking or completing a research programme. Normally over age thirty on 1 June 2000 and resident in the United Kingdom. Either educated in the United Kingdom or some other part of the Commonwealth for at least two years at secondary school level and where applicable, at first degree level, or should be able to demonstrate that he or she is a permanent member of the UK scholarly community. Persons currently resident and working overseas may not apply if they would still hold the overseas appointment during the tenure of an award.

Those who are registered or intending to register for, or waiting to have work examined for degrees, doctoral studies, professional or vocational qualifications (whether or not connected with the application being submitted for consideration) are NOT eligible.

Eligible fields: Applications will be considered in all subject areas.

Duration and timing: The awards are tenable for between 3 and 24 months. The holder of a previous award may apply for a second award but at least seven years should have elapsed since the last one. All awards must be commenced between 1 June 2000 and 1 May 2001.

Value: The amount of an award depends on the nature of the work and the circumstances of the case, but the maximum total value of a Fellowship or Grant is £16,920.

Nature of the awards: Research Grants are to assist with research expenses over and above normal living costs and are open to applicants whether in full-time permanent employment or not. Research Fellowships are primarily open to people in continuing full-time posts who need to devote a period of full-time endeavour to research while holding such posts. Applications for replacement costs will also be considered from people holding part-time appointments, who wish to concentrate on research whilst holding such posts. Fellowships provide either a contribution towards replacement teaching costs (where leave of absence is granted on full pay) or loss of earnings (where research is not normally a function of the candidate's contract or position) plus research expenses, if required.

Non-eligible costs: Equipment (e.g. computer hardware, books) or institutional charges for accommodation or overheads.

Closing date and application procedure: Completed application forms plus four photocopies must be received by 4 p.m. on Thursday 11 November 1999 and will not be considered if arriving after this.
