University Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine

University Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine to take up appointment from 1 April 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant, who will be recommended for an honorary consultant contract with the Addenbrooke's NHS Trust, will be required to undertake teaching, research, and clinical work. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095 a year. The successful candidate will be eligible to receive an additional payment for clinical responsibility related to the amount of clinical work undertaken. If, as expected, the Lecturer undertakes the equivalent of six or more NHS sessions a week of clinical work the payment will be such as to bring his or her total pensionable emoluments into line with a point on the NHS salary scale for consultants (£47,345-£61,605).

University Lecturer in the Department of Radiology

University Lecturer in the Department of Radiology (Neuroradiology), to take up appointment from 1 January 2000. The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095 a year. University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Architecture

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer, to take up appointment from 1 January 2000 or an earlier or later date to be agreed. The person appointed will be expected to teach in the area of Environmental Design at undergraduate level; to support proactively the integration of environmental concerns in the design studios, particularly at Diploma level; to act as joint course director of the M.Phil. in Environmental Design in Architecture; and to supervise research and co-ordinate funded research projects. An established and proven track record in research is essential. Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age of the person appointed, and will be, for a University Lecturer, for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of French

Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in Modern French

Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in Modern French, to take up appointment, in one case, on 1 January 2000, in the other case, on 1 October 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications for these posts are invited from candidates who are specialists in the fields of twentieth-century French literature, thought, film, or francophone studies. An ability additionally to teach some nineteenth-century French literature may be an advantage but is not a requirement of the post. The successful candidates should have either a record of research and publication in one or more of these areas or clear evidence of potential publication. They will be expected to participate in the teaching of modern French at undergraduate level, to collaborate in the teaching of the modern French elements in the M.Phil. in European Literature, to supervise Ph.D. students, and to participate fully in the language teaching and first-year literature programme of the Department.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Medieval Occitan and French

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Medieval Occitan and French, to take up appointment on 1 January 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications for this post are invited from candidates with a record of research and publication in the field of Medieval Occitan and French studies. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Medieval Occitan and French for the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, to collaborate in the M.Phil. in European Literature, to supervise doctoral research in these fields, and to participate fully in the language teaching and first-year literature programme of the Department.

This position is open to candidates with interests in any area of mathematical statistics. The successful candidate will have strong research interests in some branch of theoretical or applied statistics, and will be expected to contribute to the teaching and research programmes of the Laboratory. Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age of the person appointed, and will be, for a University Lecturer, for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. Assistant Under-Librarian (Deputy Keeper of the University Archives) in the University Library

Assistant Under-Librarian (Deputy Keeper of the University Archives) in the University Library. We are seeking a suitably qualified candidate for this post which is based in the Department of Manuscripts and University Archives. Applicants should have a good honours degree and either a postgraduate qualification in archive studies or relevant research experience, together with an informed interest in the use of technology for archives management. Appropriate experience in an archive or academic library and a knowledge of modern techniques of archive administration are desirable. Appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Under-Librarian is £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479.

Librarian in the Faculty of English

Librarian, Grade B, in the Faculty of English. The successful candidate will be expected to take up appointment as soon as possible. Applicants should have a good honours degree, preferably in English Literature, and a postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Studies. A Chartered Librarian (ALA) with several years' experience in academic libraries would be preferred. A knowledge of automated library systems and MARC cataloguing is essential. Experience of developing computer applications in libraries is highly desirable. The Librarian, who is responsible through the Library Committee to the Faculty Board of English, is responsible for all reader services, book selection and collection development, administration and forward planning, the appointment of assistant staff, and the management of that part of the Faculty's budget assigned to the Library. The Librarian is an ex officio member and secretary of the Library Committee. The appointment is for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for the Librarian of the Faculty of English is £18,185 a year, rising by seven annual increments to £24,479.

This very busy Library serves all students and members of the Faculty of English which is one of the larger Faculties and Departments in the University. It is primarily a learning resource for undergraduate students reading English throughout the University, but is also much used by postgraduate students and teaching officers of the Faculty, and by visiting scholars. Senior Technical Officer in the Department of Physics

Senior Technical Officer (Health and Safety Officer) in the Department of Physics, to take up appointment by 1 January 2000 or sooner if possible. The person appointed will be responsible to the Head of Department for all aspects of Health and Safety arising in a large, experimental science department. Applicants should have Chartered Physicist status with a postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent qualifications and experience. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for further periods of five years, or to the retiring age.

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Department of Engineering

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Department of Engineering to take up appointment on 1 October 1999, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will join a team of three Computer Officers who, as part of the Department's Computer Systems Group, support research computing. The Group consists of fourteen Computer Officers and is responsible for running the main Computer Teaching System, many of the research and administrative systems, and the network which in all connects around 1,500 computers. Members of the Group have specific areas of expertise and responsibility but are expected to contribute to other areas of the Group's work when the need arises. The main role of this post is to provide system administration and computing support for several of the Department's research groups. The systems range from desktop PCs to multiprocessor computer servers. Most run Unix but there is also a growing use of Windows NT. Applications range from in-house programs to state-of-the-art commercial packages. This diversity provides an interesting workload and there is the opportunity for the right candidate to develop new systems administration techniques and tools in this rapidly developing area. Proven technical ability, a good degree or equivalent qualification, and relevant experience of systems administration in a networked environment are required. Good communications skills, and the ability to work with users to find solutions to problems, are important to ensure that the needs of our research community are properly understood and met. The initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

Careers Adviser in the University Careers Service

Careers Adviser in the University Careers Service. The Careers Service is looking for someone with a strong interest in students and their futures to work mainly with engineering and materials science students but also with other students and graduates of the University. The successful candidate will join the busy Careers Service team (eleven advisers and twenty-four other staff) serving Cambridge students and their employers. He or she will need a degree and substantial experience of work. An up-to-date knowledge of the professional work undertaken by engineers and materials scientists is essential; an engineering qualification would be an advantage. Essential personal qualities include enthusiasm, curiosity, objectivity, stamina, and the ability to switch tasks frequently. Above all the post-holder will need to be outgoing, like people, and be able to work under pressure, both independently and in a group. Professional training courses will be available. Appointment will initially be for three years, with the possibility of renewal thereafter to the retiring age.

Senior Advisory Officer (Senior Surveyor)

Senior Advisory Officer (Senior Surveyor) in the Estate Management and Building Service, to take up appointment as soon as possible. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director responsible for maintenance and minor works, the successful applicant will head the building surveying group in the Maintenance and Minor Works Section. Applicants should be Chartered Building Surveyors with extensive experience in the maintenance of buildings of all types from medieval to highly serviced modern laboratories. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Advisory Officer is £28,478 a year, rising by three annual increments to £32,095.

The successful applicant will join the Major Projects Section to act as the interface between the University as client, the representative users, and the design team, on mechanical or electrical services issues for building projects of over £1m in value. In addition the post-holder will on occasion take on full project manager duties for specific projects. Applicants should be Chartered Mechanical or Electrical Engineers with several years' experience of construction projects of over £1m in value. Administrative Officer in the University Offices (General Board Division)

Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the General Board Division, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The duties of the post are the provision of administrative support to the Institute of Criminology. The Administrative Officer will manage the administrative functions and resources of the Institute. He or she will provide support and advice to the Director and other staff in relation to administrative matters, and will contribute to the development of policies which maximize efficiency and enhance the Institute's ability to achieve its academic objectives.
