Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science in the field of history and philosophy of science and medicine, to take up appointment on or before 1 October 2000. The Department has particular needs in history of medicine before 1800 and in biomedical ethics, but excellent candidates in all areas of history and philosophy of science and medicine are welcome to apply. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £16,655 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,815 (under review).

Computer Officer in the Computer Laboratory

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the Computer Laboratory, to take up appointment on 1 October 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter, to join a small team running the computers and network used for teaching and research in the Computer Laboratory. The person appointed will be responsible for a wide variety of systems administration tasks, including installation and maintenance of software, user support, and troubleshooting, and will be expected to progress towards management of significant parts of the computing facilities. Applicants should have experience of systems administration of at least one modern operating system such as Windows/NT or Linux, ideally in a networked environment. Initiative and the ability to work with a minimum of direct supervision within the team structure are essential. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade II, is £22,726 a year, rising by four annual increments to £26,523 (under review).
