University offices: Vacancies

The University is committed to equality of opportunity and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine

University Lecturer in Animal Reproduction in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, to take up appointment on 1 August or as soon as possible thereafter. This post entails both lecturing and practical (small-group) teaching to clinical veterinary students on reproduction in all the major domestic animal species. Applicants must be members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, with practical experience and a research record in a branch of animal reproduction. Further qualifications (e.g. an RCVS Certificate in a relevant field, an M.Sc. or Ph.D. Degree) would be an advantage. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010 (under review).

Applications (twelve copies), including a curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, should be sent to the Secretary, Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0ES, so as to reach her not later than 21 July 1999. Further details may be obtained by phone (01223 337694) or e-mail (tz101@cam. ac.uk). Informal enquiries are welcome - contact Dr P. Cockcroft (tel. 01223 339867, e-mail pdc24@cam.ac.uk) or Dr P. G. G. Jackson (tel. 01223 337685).

Assistant Under-Librarian and Assistant Library Officer in the University Library

Two posts in the Special Collections Division of the University Library: an Assistant Under-Librarian in the Manuscripts Department and an Assistant Library Officer in the Rare Books Department. Applicants should have good honours degrees and postgraduate qualifications in library and information studies or archive studies. Previous relevant experience in an academic library or archive is desirable, particularly for the post in Manuscripts, and an informed interest in using technology for the cataloguing and exploitation of special collections is essential. The appointments will be for three years for an Assistant Under-Librarian, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, or for up to five years for an Assistant Library Officer, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scales of stipends, which are under review, are:

Assistant Under-Librarian: £18,275 a year, rising by six annual increments to £23,651.
Assistant Library Officer: £15,735 a year, rising by four annual increments to £19,197.

Further details and application forms, which should be returned to the University Librarian not later than Friday, 6 August 1999, are available from the Librarian's Secretary, Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge, CB3 9DR (tel. 01223 333046, e-mail sally@ula.cam.ac.uk). Please indicate which post you are applying for. It is hoped to make an appointment at the earliest opportunity.

Computer Officers, Grade II or Grade III, in the University Computing Service

Two Computer Officers, Grade II or Grade III, in the University Computing Service, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post-holders will be involved in the development and support of central mail services and central information services (Web and news). Specific expertise in Mail systems is required for one position, and in Web and news services for the other; a thorough understanding of Unix both as a user and from a systems administration viewpoint is essential to both. In both cases the ever growing demand for the services presses the limits of the current technology, and the jobs offer corresponding challenges and satisfactions. The appointments will be made at the level of either Computer Officer, Grade II, or Grade III, according to age and experience, and will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scales of stipends, which are under review, are as follows:

Computer Officer, Grade II: £22,726 a year, rising by four annual increments to £26,523.
Computer Officer, Grade III: £18,275 a year, rising by seven annual increments to £23,651.

Application forms and further particulars are available from the Director, University Computing Service, New Museums Site, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QG (e-mail lamk2@cam.ac.uk). The closing date for completed applications is 28 July 1999.

The person appointed will have specific responsibilities under the Head of the Section in the area of pre-contract administration. Those duties will include supporting principal investigators, and maintaining good relationships with sponsors. He or she will also act as deputy to the Head of the Section in respect of the non-financial parts of the Section's function, and undertake other specific projects. Applicants should be educated to degree level and have substantial, relevant experience within higher education or a related field. A degree in a scientific discipline is preferred, and familiarity with academic research and/or experience of legal documents would be an advantage. The appointment will be made for an initial period of three years, unless that requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Registrary is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010 (under review).

Administrative Officer, Grade I or II

The person appointed is likely also to be appointed as the Secretary of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages. Administrative experience is essential, and some computing experience desirable. The appointment will be made at either Administrative Officer, Grade I, or Grade II level, depending on age, qualifications, and experience, and will be for three years, unless the Council waive this requirement, in which case the appointment will be for a period not exceeding five years. Reappointments are for periods not exceeding five years at a time, provided that an Administrative Officer may be reappointed to the retiring age when he or she has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends for the grade.

Administrative Officer (Project Officer - University Card) in the Management Information Services Division of the University Offices

Administrative Officer, Grade I (Project Officer - University Card), in the Management Information Services Division of the University Offices, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The University is introducing a University Card for all members of the University to be used as a means of identification and to gain access to computer services, libraries, and facilities throughout the University. The postholder, who will report to the Director of Management Information Services, will be expected to plan and manage the introduction of the card and its issue to over 20,000 students and staff. Candidates should be educated to degree level or equivalent with demonstrable analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Experience of managing complex projects is more important than detailed technical knowledge of card systems. Candidates must be self-motivated and able to motivate others to achieve demanding project milestones within budget. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age.
