Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine in the Department of Medicine

University Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine in the Department of Medicine, to take up appointment immediately. The successful applicant, who will be recommended for an honorary consultant contract with the Addenbrooke's NHS Trust, will be required to undertake teaching, research, and clinical work. The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,107 a year rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010 a year (under review). The successful candidate will be eligible to receive an additional payment for clinical responsibility related to the amount of clinical work undertaken. If, as expected, the Lecturer undertakes the equivalent of six or more NHS sessions a week of clinical work the payment will be such as to bring his or her total pensionable emoluments into line with a point on the NHS salary scale for consultants (£47,345-£61,605).

University Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry

University Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer in Theoretical Chemistry, to take up appointment from 1 October 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. Preference may be given to candidates with research interests in quantum chemistry, density functional theory, or the simulation of clusters, disordered systems, and complex fluids. Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends (currently under review) are:

University Lecturer: £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,655 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,815.

Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the University Offices (Research Grants and Contracts Section)

Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the Research Grants and Contracts Section of the University Offices, to take up appointment from 1 August 1999. Applications are invited for the newly created post of Reporting Accountant in the Finance office of the Section. Research Grant income has shown steady growth in recent years and now totals over £100m a year, making it the largest activity in the University. The Finance office is responsible for the central administration of and accounting for Research Grants awarded to the University and works to provide an efficient link between the sponsors and the Departments.

Reporting to the Assistant Treasurer (Research Grants Accountant) the role is an exciting one and will require a confident and competent person who is self-motivated and comfortable with both people and numbers. The key tasks include the development and preparation of research grant management information for central Uni- versity bodies and publications; the preparation and organization of training programmes for Departmental Administrators and Principal Investigators on accounting and procedures pertaining to research grants; the provision of general information and support to departments as required; and the planning and conducting of regular reviews of the Section's working practices. Candidates should be qualified to at least intermediate level with a recognized accounting body (ICAEW, CIMA, or ACCA) and have excellent spreadsheet and word processing skills. A minimum of five years' work experience in an accounts or office environment is a necessity. The appointment will be for three years, unless that requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends, which is under review, for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is £18,275 a year, rising by six annual increments to £23,651 a year.
