The purpose of these amendments is (a) to discontinue the practical examination in Part IB, and (b) to replace the existing paper 'Subjects in the history of music I and ethnomusicology' by two separate papers. The regulations have been amended, with effect from 1 October 1999, as follows:

Paper 3. Subjects in the history of music II.
Paper 4. Ethnomusicology.
Paper 5. Analysis and set work.

Each paper shall be of three hours' duration, except Paper 4. The examination for Paper 4 shall consist of a written paper of two hours' duration, together with the submission of (i) a transcription of a piece or pieces of recorded music chosen by the candidate and approved by the Faculty Board, and (ii) an essay of not more than 3,000 words (excluding bibliography and appendices), comprising an analytical study of the transcription.

A candidate for Part IB shall offer:

(a) either Paper 1 or a portfolio of tonal compositions submitted in accordance with Regulation 16;
(b) two papers chosen from Papers 2-4;
(c) Papers 5 and 6.

Regulation 21.

(b) the composers set for Paper 1, the subjects in history of music set for Papers 2 and 3, and the subject in ethnomusicology set for Paper 4 of Part IB for the examination to be held in the academical year next following;

The supplementary regulations for the Music Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 360) have also been amended, with effect from the same date, as follows:

Part Ib

By rescinding the regulation for the practical examination, by renumbering Papers 4 and 5 as 5 and 6, and by replacing the regulations for Papers 2 and 4 by the following regulations:

Paper 2. Subjects in the history of music I

The paper will contain questions on not fewer than two subjects or periods in the history of European music before 1750. Candidates will be required to answer three questions.

Paper 4. Ethnomusicology

The written paper will contain questions on topics relating to specific world music cultures.

For the transcription exercise, candidates must submit details of their proposed piece or pieces of music (title or titles and a short description, together with a note of the total duration and a reference to the recorded source or sources) to the Secretary of the Faculty Board not later than the division of the Lent Term; this music need not be related to the subject prescribed for the written paper.

The transcription and the essay shall be submitted to the Chairman of Examiners, together with an audio-cassette recording of the music transcribed, not later than the fifteenth day of the Full Easter Term in which the examination is to be held.
