Announcement of lectures and seminars

The following lectures and seminars will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Cambridge European Trust. The 1998-99 Cambridge European Trust Lecture Series has the theme The EU and the nation state. The next lecture in the series, entitled The future of the nation state, will be given by Professor Anthony Giddens, Director of the London School of Economics, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, 13 May, in the Faculty of Law, West Road. The lecture will be followed by a reception, generously sponsored by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

Cambridge Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Ageing (CIRCA). A workshop under the general title Generations will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, 12 May, in Room 606, Centre for Family Research, Free School Lane. The speakers are:

Bryan Turner Bourdieu, habitus, and generation.
Molly Andrews Generational consciousness.
Christine Minas Generation of the Depression.
Jackie Scott Generations and social representations.

MRC Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair and the Parke-Davis Neuroscience Research Centre. Distinguished Lecture Series in the Neurosciences. The following lecture will be given in the Large Seminar Room, Institute of Public Health, Forvie Site, Robinson Way (adjacent to the Addenbrooke's Hospital site), at 5 p.m. on Monday, 24 May: Transplantation of neural progenitor cells to the brain, by Professor Anders Björklund, of the Wallenberg Neuroscience Centre, Lund, Sweden, Visiting Professor at Clare Hall. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.

Institute of Public Health. Bradford Hill Seminar Series. Seminars will be held at 1 p.m. prompt on Fridays in the Large Seminar Room, 1st Floor, Institute of Public Health, University Forvie Site, Robinson Way (Parke-Davis Site).

14 May Dementia in developing countries, by Mr Martin Prince, of the Institute of Psychiatry, London.
21 May The role of hysterectomy (the male operation) in society, by Professor Stephen Smith, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
28 May Genetic and molecular studies on Huntingdon Disease, by Dr David Rubinsztein, of the Department of Medical Genetics.
4 June Prospects for genome-wide association studies in common diseases, by Dr Douglas Easton, of the CRC Genetic Epidemiology Unit.
2 July Quality of life in dementia, by Professor Peter Whitehouse, of Case Western Reserve University.

IPH Discussion Groups. Seminars will be held at 1 p.m. prompt on Tuesdays in the Large Seminar Room, 1st Floor, Institute of Public Health.

18 May Can you estimate energy expenditure objectively in population-based studies?, by Kirsten Rennie, of the Department of Community Medicine.
25 May Making complex datasets accessible: an interactive web-based approach, by Neil Walker, of the MRC Biostatistics Unit.
1 June Dietary intake of soybean protein and menstrual cycle length in pre-menopausal Singapore Chinese women, by Rupert Jakes, of the Department of Community Medicine.
8 June Effect of altering eligibility criteria for entry onto a kidney transplant waiting list, by Jo Johnson, of the MRC Biostatistics Unit.
