REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS: NOTICE BY THE GENERAL BOARD

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Education Tripos, Part II

The New Regulations for the Education Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 274) have been amended as set out below. The purpose of these amendments is to provide an alternative scheme of examination for candidates taking Part II who do not wish, or are not permitted, to undertake the final period of professional placement for the Certificate in Education. The regulations have been amended, with effect from 1 October 1999, as follows:

Regulation 11.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

11. There shall be two alternative schemes of examination for Part II, (A) and (B).

A candidate who undertakes the final period of professional placement for the Certificate of Education1 shall offer scheme (A), as follows:

(a) course-work as prescribed for Section I;
(b) course-work as prescribed for Section II;
(c) either Paper 1(a) or Paper 1(b);
(d) one paper chosen from among Papers 2-5;
(e) a third paper which may be either a further paper chosen from among Papers 2-5 or Paper 6;

provided that, with the permission of the Faculty Board, a candidate may offer, in place of one paper from among Papers 2-5, a dissertation, of not less than 8,000 words and not more than 10,000 words (inclusive of notes and appendices), on a topic that falls within the field of that paper.

A candidate who does not undertake the final period of professional placement for the Certificate of Education1 shall offer scheme (B), as follows:

(a) course-work as prescribed for Section I;
(b) course-work as prescribed for Section II
(c) one paper chosen from among Papers 2-5;
(d) two further papers chosen from among Papers 1(a), 1(b), and 2-6,

provided that

(i) a candidate may not offer both Paper 1(a) and Paper 1(b);
(ii) with the permission of the Faculty Board, a candidate may offer, in place of one paper from among Papers 2-5, a dissertation, of not less than 8,000 words and not more than 10,000 words (inclusive of notes and appendices), on a topic that falls within the field of that paper;
(e) a dissertation, of not less than 8,000 words and not more than 10,000 words (inclusive of notes and appendices), which shall be on a topic that falls within one of the following fields:
(i) the main subject offered by the candidate in Part I of the Tripos, provided that a candidate shall not offer a dissertation on a topic falling within the scope of any paper that he or she offered in Part I;
(ii) the subjects specified for Papers 2-6, provided that a candidate shall not offer a dissertation on a topic that falls within the scope of any paper that he or she intends to offer in the examination for Part II.
