University offices: Vacancies

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Physiology

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Physiology, to take up appointment from 1 October 1999. Applicants must be enthusiastic about their research in Physiology, which should be in the area of signalling in both platelets and megakaryocytes. The successful candidate will be expected to secure outside funding and be willing, given notice, to teach well in any area of physiology. Applications are welcomed from medically-qualified candidates. Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be, for a University Lecturer, for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,655 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,815.

Four posts in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service)

Assistant Director (Intermediate Projects) to take up appointment from 1 August 1999. The successful applicant will head the section responsible for project management of capital projects in the range of £1m to £6m. Applications are invited from Chartered Architects, Building and Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, or members of an equivalent profession, who have had good experience in construction projects of over £1m in value. Applicants should have clear and proven managerial ability, be pro-active, and communicate well. They should also have experience in the use of computers in capital procurement and project management. The appointment will be for an initial period of three years (unless this requirement is waived by the Council), with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable stipend for an Assistant Director is £34,464 a year. The closing date for applications is 17 May 1999.

Assistant Treasurer (Directorate Accountant) to take up appointment as soon as possible. The holder of this new post will report directly to the Director of Estate Management and will be responsible for the full range of financial assessment, advice, and reporting, management and cost accounting, and related activities undertaken within EMBS. The post-holder will head a new section bringing together accounts staff currently working in EMBS and the Finance Division. Applicants should be qualified accountants with a minimum of five years' post-qualification experience. Good managerial, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential. Previous experience of staff management and the operation of a multi-disciplinary practice as well as direct knowledge of the construction industry are desirable. The appointment will be for an initial period of three years (unless this requirement is waived by the Council), with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Treasurer is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010. The closing date for applications is 17 May 1999.

Advisory Officers, Grade I, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The successful applicants will fill project management posts in the teams responsible for major and intermediate projects. Applications are invited from Chartered Architects, Building and Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, or members of an equivalent profession, who have had several years' experience of construction projects of over £1m in value. Applicants should have clear and proven managerial ability, be pro-active, and communicate well. They should also have experience in computerized project management techniques. It is anticipated that there will be two appointments at the level of Advisory Officer, Grade I. The appointments will be for three years in the first instance.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Advisory Officer, Grade I, is £21,815 a year, rising by five annual increments to £26,523. The closing date for applications is 4 May 1999.
