Applications are invited for the following University offices:

Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Medicine

Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia, to take up appointment as soon as possible after 31 August 1999. The office is assigned to the Department of Medicine, under the supervision of Dr David Menon. The person appointed will be required to undertake clinical work, teaching, and research, preferably for a higher degree, and will be recommended for an honorary Specialist Registrar contract with the Anglia and Oxford Regional Office. Teaching will include acting as Clinical Supervisor to a group of students. The appointment will be for four years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Clinical Lecturer is £22,510 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £38,920. The Clinical Lecturer will be eligible to receive a non-pensionable payment for extra clinical work.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Engineering

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Engineering in Thermo-Fluids Engineering, to take up appointment on 1 January 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The person appointed will be expected to play a part in the teaching (particularly thermodynamics) of the four-year course leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees. He or she will have an active research record within the general field of thermo-fluid dynamics and a special interest relevant to the power generation industry (e.g., multi-phase flows, chemically reacting flows, pollutant formation, or fuel cell technology). Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will, in the first instance, be for three years or five years for a University Lecturer, or three years for a University Assistant Lecturer, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in the Politics of the United States. Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Assistant Director of Research in the Faculty of Divinity

Assistant Director of Research in the Faculty of Divinity in Islamic Studies to take up appointment on 1 October 1999. The Faculty of Divinity hope soon to be in a position to appoint to this post. Applications are invited from scholars with a working knowledge of Arabic and a primary expertise in Islamic theology, philosophy, or mysticism. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate a knowledge of Islam's relationship with other faiths. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for further periods of five years, or to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Director of Research is £20,107 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £29,048.

Computer Officer, Grade IV, in the Department of Physics

Computer Officer, Grade IV, in the Department of Physics (Cavendish Laboratory). The Computer Officer will support the work of the Astrophysics Group, with specific responsibility for the development and management of a network of Windows NT based administration systems. There will also be more general involvement in the hardware and system management of the Group's computing resources, which include a substantial cluster of UNIX workstations both within the Laboratory and at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory. The successful applicant should ideally have some working knowledge of PC networking issues, but the post would be appropriate for a recent graduate in Computing, Physics, or a related discipline. There will be opportunities to develop skills in systems administration, including hardware installation, networking, etc., and some course based training may be available. The appointment will be initially for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. It is hoped that promotion to Grade III will be possible after a probationary period.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade IV, is £15,735 a year, rising by four annual increments to £19,197.
