The respective Boards of Electors intend to elect to two newly established Professorships with effect from 1 October 1999 or such later date as may be arranged.

PROFESSORSHIP OF SOCIOLOGY

The Professor of Sociology will be head of the Department of Sociology in the first instance and will provide intellectual leadership for this new department. Applications are welcomed in any substantive area of Sociology but preference will be given to a candidate who maintains Oxford's tradition of integrating sociological theory and empirical research.

A Fellowship at Nuffield College is attached to this Professorship.

BARNETT PROFESSORSHIP OF SOCIAL POLICY

The Barnett Professor of Social Policy will be expected to play a key role in providing intellectual leadership for the discipline, and in developing the Department of Applied Social Studies and Social Research as a lead-ing centre for social policy teaching and research. Applications are welcomed in any substantive area of social policy but preference will be given to a candidate who, in addition to familiarity with British social policy, demonstrates commitment to a comparative approach.

A Fellowship at St Cross College is attached to this Professorship.
