Applications are invited for the following University office:

Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in a newly created Laboratory which is being set up as a partnership between the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) and the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, with an anticipated starting date no later than 31 July 1999.

Research in the Laboratory will focus on the processing and properties of composite materials, with an emphasis on polymer-matrix systems. The successful candidate is likely to have an exceptional record of achievement in research with a particular interest in the development of high-performance polymer composite materials. He or she will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Laboratory, and will also contribute to the teaching activities of the Department. It is also expected that the Assistant Director will interact with personnel at the Structural Materials Centre at DERA Farnborough and will contribute to the formulation of a strategy for research in polymer composites throughout DERA. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for further periods of five years, or to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Director of Research is £20,107 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £29,048.
