VACANCIES

Department of Physics (Cavendish Laboratory)

Astrophysics Research Group

PROGRAMME MANAGER

The Astrophysics Group wishes to appoint a Programme Manager to begin work as soon as possible. He or she will have overall responsibility for managing the research activities of the group which include experimental and theoretical astrophysical studies, instrumental development, and data analysis. The research programme is funded from a range of grant awards, mainly from PPARC, and includes a 'rolling' grant of about £1.2m a year and several substantial instrumental development awards. The group runs a radio astronomy observatory where it has several large instruments.

The successful applicant will have a degree or equivalent in a science-based subject and proven experience in the management of scientific or tech- nical projects. The appointment will be within the University's Senior Research Associate scale and is in the range £20,107 to £29,048 a year and is pensionable. The funds for this post are available for three years in the first instance and the post may, subject to the availability of funding, be renewed for a further period or periods.

Please write for an application form and further details to Mrs P. A. Hicks, Astrophysics Research Group, Cavendish Laboratory, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0HE, or contact the Head of the Group, Professor R. E. Hills (e-mail richard@ mrao.cam.ac.uk). The closing date is 31 January 1999.

Semiconductor Physics Group

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Semiconductor Physics Group to investigate the generation of THz radiation using ultra-fast pulsed visible laser excitation of microstructured photonic materials.

These structures will be grown and patterned in situ using the unique molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) fabrication facility in the Semiconductor Physics (SP) Group. This combines MBE growth, focused ion beam lithography, and hydrogen radical cleaning within one complete ultra high vacuum system. Use will also be made of the group's extensive clean room facilities, consisting of optical and electron beam lithography, as well its wide range of cryogenic facilities. THz emission measurements will be undertaken at Toshiba Research Europe Limited (Cambridge) with whom we have a close collaboration. General information on the SP group can be found on http://www.sp.phy.cam.ac.uk/.

Applicants, who should have Ph.D. Degrees in Physics, Electronic Engineering, or an allied discipline, are sought with experience in one or more of the following areas: ultra-fast lasers and spectroscopy, the design and fabrication of photonic band gap structures, photoluminescence. The appointment is funded by a 'Realising our Potential Award (ROPA)'. Funds for this post are available for two years in the first instance and the post may, subject to the availability of funding, be renewed for a further period or periods. The salary is in the range £15,735 to £21,815 a year and is pensionable. Informal enquiries should be made to Dr E. H. Linfield (e-mail ehl10@cam.ac.uk, tel. 01223 337387).

Applications (ref EHL), including a curriculum vitae and the names of two referees, should be sent to Mrs C. A. Jost, Semiconductor Physics Group, Cavendish Laboratory, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0HE. The closing date is 19 February 1999.

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and has arrangements for part-time work.
