COLLEGE NOTICES

Christ's College

JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The Governing Body of Christ's College invites applications for one or two Open Research Fellowships, available in any subject and tenable for a period of four years from 1 October 1999. Were it to be the case, a successful applicant conducting research in parasitology or biological and clinical sciences relevant to cancer would be appointed to the Fantham Fellow- ship or the J.B. and Millicent Kay Prize Fellowship, respectively. Tenure of all Junior Research Fellowships may be split by a period, or periods, of intermission (unpaid) not exceeding two years in duration, to enable the holder to pursue research away from Cambridge. Application is open to holders of a degree from, or current members of, any university in the British Isles, who by 1 January 1999 will have completed at least three but not more than ten terms of full-time research. Candidates should normally not have passed their twenty-eighth birthday by Monday, 1 March 1999.

Junior Research Fellows receive a pensionable stipend, which is on a scale of £10,516 to £12,182 a year and, for those with a Ph.D. or equivalent, £11,308 to £13,054. Fellows living out of College will receive a supplement of approximately £2,600. Research Fellows are entitled to seven free meals a week and the use of a room free of charge. A limited amount of teaching in College is permitted, for which payment will be made at the usual rate. The College pays the University Composition Fee in respect of Fellows who are registered research students; other expenses, such as travel and typing costs, may also be paid. Financial support from other sources may be taken into account.

Candidates should send to the Master's Secretary, Christ's College, Cambridge, CB2 3BU, so as to reach her not later than Monday, 1 March 1999:

(a) two copies of the application form, to be obtained from the Master's Secretary before Tuesday, 16 February. (Please note: application forms are to be requested in writing only; envelopes should be marked J.R.F.);
(b) two copies of a statement of not more than 1,500 words outlining their research (completed and proposed).

Candidates should also arrange for two people familiar with their work to send references to the Master's Secretary so as to reach her by the same date. The appropriate forms for the use of referees will be included with the application forms. Late applications cannot be accepted.

Short-listed candidates will be invited by letter (dated Wednesday, 17 March) to submit by Monday, 29 March 1999, three copies of any published or unpublished work with which they wish to support their application. This work need not be a formal dissertation, but it should illustrate the nature and quality of their research work. The successful candidate(s) will be notified on or about 25 May 1999.

DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Applications are invited for the post of Development Director at Christ's College, to take office as soon as possible. The Development Director will take responsibility for a continuing fund-raising campaign, including a quincentenary appeal prior to 2005. The appointee will also be expected to lead and give impetus to all aspects of fund-raising work, in conjunction with the Master and Fellows, including face-to-face fund-raising and alumni relations activity. He or she will also investigate other sources of support from individuals, charities, and commercial organizations.

The post offers important and challenging responsibilities in a lively College environment. Previous experience of fund-raising is not essential but applicants should be able to demonstrate that they have the personal qualities to manage an operation of this kind in the College context. The stipend will be in excess of £30,000 a year, with membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme. The appointment will be for seven years, subject to a review after two. The Development Director will be eligible for election to a Fellowship of the College.

A detailed job specification may be viewed on Christ's College web-site (http://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/) or may be obtained (preferably by sending a self-addressed envelope) from the Bursar's Secretary, Christ's College, Cambridge, CB2 3BU. Applications, with particulars of the applicant's career and the names of three persons from whom references may be sought, should be received by 18 January 1999.
