Graces submitted to the Regent House on 9 December 1998

The Council submit the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 115), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 18 December 1998.

1. That the following regulations be approved to govern the award of the Armourers and Brasiers Prizes and Medal:

Armourers and Brasiers Prizes and Medal

1. The sum made available annually by the Armourers and Brasiers' Company shall be used to provide two prizes called the Armourers and Brasiers Prizes.

2. The Prizes shall be awarded by the Examiners for the subject Materials Science and Metallurgy in the Natural Sciences Tripos, one by the Examiners for that subject in Part II for a distinguished performance in that examination and one by the Examiners for that subject in Part III for a distinguished performance in that examination.

3. The winner of the Prize for Part III shall also be awarded a medal provided by the Armourers and Brasiers' Company.1

2. That Dr D. C. Nicholls, W, be appointed a member of the Finance Committee of the Council to serve for three years from 1 January 1999.

3. That Professor A. W. Cuthbert, Master of Fitzwilliam College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve for two years from 1 January 1999.

4. That Professor P. Goddard, Master of St John's College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve for two years from 1 January 1999.

5. That Baroness Perry, President of Lucy Cavendish College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve for two years from 1 January 1999.

6. That Professor J. H. Baker, of St Catharine's College, be appointed Chairman of the Septemviri to serve for one year from 1 January 1999.2

7. That Recommendation I contained in paragraph 4 of the Report, dated 21 October 1998, of the General Board on the procedure for the consideration of applications for the establishment of personal Professorships and Readerships in 1999 and subsequent years (Reporter, p. 106) be approved.3

8. That Recommendation II contained in paragraph 4 of the Report, dated 21 October 1998, of the General Board on the procedure for the consideration of applications for the establishment of personal Professorships and Readerships in 1999 and subsequent years (Reporter, p. 106) be approved.3

1 For some years the Armourers and Brasiers' Company have provided a prize and a medal each year for a distinguished performance in the subject Materials Science and Metallurgy in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos. With the agreement of the Company, it is now proposed (a) to use the annual donation to fund two prizes, one for Part II and one for Part III, (b) to link the award of the Medal to the Prize for Part III, and (c) to make formal recognition of the Company's generosity by introducing regulations to govern these awards.

2 Professor Hepple, the current Chairman, has been elected to the Council and is therefore debarred from serving on the Septemviri (see Statute U, V, 3).
