Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, Part I, Preliminary Examination for Part II, and Part II, 1999: Notice

The Faculty Board of Divinity give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 1999, the form of the examinations for the Theological and Religious Studies Tripos and the Preliminary Examination will be changed, as follows:

Paper 7

This paper will contain eight passages for comment from 1 Corinthians, of which candidates will be required to attempt four. There will also be at least eleven essay questions on the set texts and other parts of the syllabus, of which three must be attempted, including at least one on Acts 1-15 or Galatians 1-2.

NRSV Bibles will be available for use in the examination.

Paper 16

This paper will contain four sections, as follows:

Section A will contain at least eight questions on the religion and literature of the prophets.

Section B will contain at least twelve questions on the rest of the Old Testament.

Section C will contain one question requiring comment on two out of four passages from each of the texts prescribed for Part II of the Tripos.

Section D will contain one question requiring comment on five out of eight passages from the texts prescribed for the Preliminary Examination.

Candidates for the Preliminary Examination will be required to attempt (i) three questions from Sections A and B, including at least one question from Section A but not necessarily including any from Section B, and (ii) Section D. Candidates for Part II of the Tripos and candidates for the Diploma in Theology will be required to attempt (i) three questions from Sections A and B, including at least one question from Section A and one from Section B, and (ii) Section C. NRSV Bibles will be available for use in the examination, but candidates are not expected to show greater precision in biblical references as a result of the availability of Bibles.

Paper 18

This paper will be divided into three sections, as follows:

Section A will comprise one question containing ten passages for comment, two from each of the four Gospels and two from other early Christian and Jewish sources; candidates will be required to comment on three passages.

Section B will contain four questions; one will require exposition of a passage offered in synoptic form in Greek and English, and three will be essay questions.

Section C will contain at least nine essay questions on other aspects of the syllabus.

Candidates for the Preliminary Examination will be required to attempt any four questions. Candidates for Part II of the Tripos and candidates for the Diploma in Theology will be required to attempt four questions, including one from each section.

Paper 21

This paper will contain five sections, as follows:

Section A. For the Preliminary Examination: The rise and formation of Christianity to A.D. 600.

For the Tripos and the Diploma: The mission and expansion of Christianity.

Section B. Doctrines of God and of the person of Christ.

Section C. The life and thought of Augustine.

Section D. For the Preliminary Examination: Monasticism and asceticism from Antony to Benedict.

For the Tripos and the Diploma: Christian spirituality.

Section E. For the Preliminary Examination: Late antique Christianity in its social context.

For the Tripos and the Diploma: The Church and social relations.

Each section will contain not less than two and not more than four questions. Candidates will be required to answer four questions chosen from at least three sections.

Candidates who are also offering Paper 33A may not offer Section C.

Paper 36B

This paper will be divided into three sections A, B, and C. Section A will contain questions on the topic in the context of the Jewish tradition. Section B will contain questions on the topic in the context of the Christian tradition. Section C will contain questions requiring comparative treatment of the topic. Each section will contain not less than four and not more than six questions; candidates will be required to answer four questions, including at least one from each section.
