University offices: Vacancies

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Italian

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Italian to take up appointment on 1 October 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to research and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the literature, culture, and history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and should also be qualified to participate fully in the teaching of the Italian language. Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,655 a year, rising by six annual increments to 21,815.

Technical Officer in the Department of Physics

Technical Officer in the Department of Physics to take up appointment as soon as possible. A well-qualified Electrical Engineer is required to work in the Astrophysics Group on the design and development of advanced astronomical instrumentation. Current projects in the group include millimetre-wave receivers for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii, systems for measuring structure in the Cosmic Microwave Background, and aperture synthesis telescopes at optical wavelengths. A strong background in electronics, with qualifications to at least first-degree level, is required, together with knowledge of analogue, digital, and microwave techniques, as well as familiarity with interfacing to microprocessors and use of computer-aided design techniques. Applicants should have substantial experience in at least one of these areas. The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Technical Officer is £17,570 a year, rising by five annual increments to £21,815.
