Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer in the Department of Pathology

University Lecturer in the Department of Pathology in the area of Cell Biology to join the Division of Cell and Genetic Pathology and to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Lecturer will be expected to initiate a new programme in epithelial biology, with particular reference to the regulation of differentiation and apoptosis. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. Degree or equivalent. A strong record in attracting funding for supportive research is essential, and evidence of skill in group leadership and the exploitation of new technologies is important. The successful candidate will participate in undergraduate teaching, including training and research methodology. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.

Advisory Officers in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service)

Advisory Officers, Grade I, and Senior Advisory Officer in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service) to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Appointments Committee concerned hope soon to be in a position to appoint to these offices. The successful applicants will fill project management posts in the teams responsible for major and intermediate projects. Applications are invited from Chartered Architects, Building and Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, or members of an equivalent profession, who have had several years' experience of construction projects of over £1m in value. Applicants should have clear and proven managerial ability, be pro-active, and communicate well. It is anticipated that there will be two appointments at the level of Advisory Officer, Grade I, and one at the level of Senior Advisory Officer. The appointments will be for three years in the first instance.

The pensionable scales of stipend are:

Senior Advisory Officer: £27,515 a year, rising by three annual increments to £31,010.

Advisory Officer, Grade I: £21,815 a year, rising by five annual increments to £26,523.

Assistant Registrary in the School of Clinical Medicine (Finance and Resources Division)

Assistant Registrary in the School of Clinical Medicine, to take up appointment from 18 January 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Assistant Registrary will head the Finance and Resources Division of the School's Office, will play the key role in the overall management of the School's resources, and contribute actively to the development of policies and procedures which will maximize the use of those resources. The post-holder will provide support to the Head and Secretary of the School on planning and management, to Departments on grants/contracts, research and support staff matters, and buildings, and to academic support services. All aspects involve close working with the NHS. Candidates should have appropriate administrative experience, preferably within a university or research institute, and be educated to at least degree level. The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, unless this requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Registrary is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Department of Engineering

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Department of Engineering to take up appointment on 1 January 1999, or as soon as possible thereafter. The main role of the officer will be to manage a network of IBM PC compatible computers used in research and teaching. The majority of these systems are owned by the Signal Processing Research Group with whom the officer will have ties. The systems are organized in three Novell Netware and Windows NT networks, each with around twenty machines. The officer will join the Department's Computer Systems Group, which currently consists of twelve Computer Officers and is responsible for the Department's computer systems and a network comprising over 1,500 systems. Members of the group have specific areas of expertise and responsibility but are expected to contribute to other areas of the group's work when the need arises. A good degree or equivalent qualification and proven ability in this area are required. Experience in any of the following areas would be useful: Novell Netware, Windows NT, Unix, and TCP/IP networking. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade III, is £18,275 a year, rising by six annual increments to £23,651 a year.

Computer Officer, Grade III or IV, in the University Computing Service

Computer Officer, Grade III or IV, in the University Computing Service to take up appointment as soon as possible. We are looking for a Unix system administrator for a post in our Unix Support group. This group provides services and support for other Unix system administrators within the University and its related institutions. The work is challenging, sometimes exciting, and requires familiarity with a variety of flavours of Unix. An understanding of Unix security issues would be an advantage. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scales of stipends for Computer Officers are:

Grade III: £18,275, rising by six annual increments to £23,651.

Grade IV: £15,735, rising by three annual increments to £18,275.
