Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics: Notice

FIELDS MEDALS 1998

The Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and the London Mathematical Society will be hosts at a 'Spitalfields Day' meeting to celebrate the recent award of the Fields Medals to Professor R. E. Borcherds and to Professor W. T. Gowers. The meeting will take place at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Clarkson Road, on Friday, 6 November 1998. The programme will consist of talks by the medallists on their work designed for a general mathematical audience:

3 p.m. Fourier analysis and Szemerédi's theorem, by Timothy Gowers (Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics).
4 p.m. Tea.
4.30 p.m. What is moonshine?, by Richard Borcherds (Royal Society Professor).
5.30 p.m. Further refreshment.
