Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Pathology

Clinical Lecturer in Virology in the Department of Pathology to take up appointment on 1 January 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should have suitable experience and be of the standing required for an honorary NHS contract. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake teaching and clinical duties, and the post provides the opportunity for the holder to qualify professionally while undertaking research. The successful candidate will be based in the Virology section of the Clinical Microbiology and Public Health Laboratory at Addenbrooke's Hospital and research laboratory space will be provided in the Division of Virology, Department of Pathology, also at Addenbrooke's Hospital. The appointment will be for four years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years.

The pensionable scale of stipends (from 1 December 1998) for a Clinical Lecturer is £22,510 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £38,920.

University Lecturer in the Department of Plant Sciences

University Lecturer in the Department of Plant Sciences to take up appointment on 1 January 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates in any relevant area are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in those active in experimental or mathematical ecology with interests in temperate European ecosystems and whole plant physiologists who relate their research to the ecological performance of plants, but candidates in other areas will be given serious consideration. The Department is one of the few remaining University Departments in the UK dedicated solely to the study of plants and fungi and its interests span all levels from the ecological to the molecular. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.

Language Teaching Officer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese

Language Teaching Officer in Spanish, in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, to take up appointment on 1 January 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Officer will be a native speaker of Spanish with excellent command of English and will have a good honours degree or equivalent. He or she will be responsible for the teaching, coordination, and examination of Spanish language at all levels. A language-teaching qualification and/or experience of teaching in higher education may be an advantage. There is no research requirement for this post. The appointment will be for up to five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Language Teaching Officer is £14,842 a year, rising by three annual increments to £17,570.

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the University Computing Service

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the University Computing Service, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The successful applicant will play a crucial role in a small group of the Network Division, responsible for the planning and operation of the equipment used for the infrastructure of the University Data Network (CUDN), particularly switches and routers and their associated support equipment, and for its connection to the Internet. The CUDN is currently being upgraded to have an ATM backbone operating over an extensive network of private fibre-optic cables across the City of Cambridge. The majority of connections to the various institutions of the University are currently 10 Mbit/s ethernet and will be upgraded to 100 Mbit/s during the coming academical year. Applicants should have several years' experience in data networks and a thorough understanding of IP and associated protocols. Experience with using ATM would be an advantage. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade II, is £22,726 a year, rising by four annual increments to £26,523.

Secretary of the Department of Plant Sciences

Secretary of the Department of Plant Sciences to take up appointment from 1 December 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Secretary is responsible to the Head of Department (Professor Roger A. Leigh) for all aspects of the administration of the Department, including delegated responsibility for managing the support staff and all financial matters. Candidates should be educated at least to degree level, with relevant experience in a senior administrative post, preferably within a university or research institute. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for the Secretary of the Department of Plant Sciences is £19,197 a year, rising by five annual increments to £23,651.
