Pembroke College

GRADUATE AWARDS

Our funds are limited, and all Graduate Students are expected to apply for any external funding for which they are eligible. In making our awards preference is given to those who are ineligible for other funding and have placed Pembroke as their first choice college, and to those intending to register for a Ph.D. rather than a one or two year taught post graduate course.

The following entrance awards are available:

Research Studentships

Each year the College hopes to award one fully supported Studentship, in any subject, to a candidate who intends to register for the Ph.D. Degree at the University of Cambridge. The Studentship will have a value sufficient, if necessary, to pay University and College fees with a maintenance allowance equivalent to that provided by a State Studentship (£5,295 in 1997-98). Financial assistance may also be given towards the cost of field work, attendance at conferences, and other essential expenses.

The Nahum Graduate Scholarship in Physics
The Thornton Graduate Scholarship in History
The Ziegler Graduate Scholarship in Law

The College hopes to award graduate Scholarships in Physics, History, and Law to candidates who intend to register for the Ph.D. Degree at the University of Cambridge. The Scholarships will have a value sufficient to pay College fees for three years. Candidates are expected to meet the costs of University fees and maintenance from other sources.

The Janeway Graduate Bursary

The College hopes to award a Bursary to assist a Graduate Student reading for a higher degree in economics, economic history, or related disciplines. The Bursary would be a one-time payment of a sum to be determined by the College, up to and including £2,500.

Graduate Bursaries

A number of Graduate Bursaries are also available, each with a value of up to £500 a year. They are intended to help support students registered for a higher degree or other postgraduate qualification in the University, and are provided from the Pembroke U.S. Alumni Studentship Fund.

Pembroke Australian Scholarship

One or two awards, each of a value of £500, may be made annually from a Fund provided by an Australian Committee which raises support for this purpose. Applicants must normally reside in Australia and hold a qualification from an Australian tertiary institution. There is no restriction as to the academic field.

Application procedure for all above Studentships, Scholarships, and Bursaries

All applicants must apply in the first instance to the Board of Graduate Studies on CIGAS Form A (available from the Secretary, Board of Graduate Studies, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RZ). The awards are conditional on the selected students being admitted as a registered Graduate Student by the Board of Graduate Studies with effect from 1 October each academical year. Candidates should indicate on this form that they are applying for a Pembroke College award, and in making awards preference will be given to those who nominate Pembroke as their college of first choice.

In addition, all applicants must complete a short preliminary application form (available from the Pembroke Admissions Office) and return this to the office no later than 31 March.

All candidates are expected to apply for state awards for which they are eligible. A candidate who is liable for University fees at the overseas rate is expected to apply through the Board of Graduate Studies for an Overseas Research Students (ORS) Award and an Overseas Student Bursary. The College will take into account candidates' income from other sources when making awards.
