Wingate Scholarships, 1999

Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social, or environmental value, and to outstandingly talented musicians for advanced training.

They are designed to help with the costs of a specific project which may last up to three years. The average total award is about £6,500 and the maximum in any one year is £10,000. The Scholarship Committee may take the personal circumstances of a candidate into account as well as the excellence of a project.

The work to be undertaken may or may not be in the context of a higher degree.

Awards are not made for taught courses of any kind, including those at art, drama, or business schools or those leading to professional qualifications, or for electives.

Applicants must be:

(1)	able to satisfy the Scholarship Committee that they need financial support to undertake the work projected
(2)	able to show why the proposed work is unlikely to attract Research Council, British Academy, or major agency funding
(3)	citizens of the United Kingdom or other Commonwealth country, Ireland or Israel; or of another EU country provided that they are and have been, for at least five years resident in the UK.
(4)	living in the British Isles during the period of application
(5)	twenty-four or over on 1 September 1999.

The closing date for applications is 1 February 1999. Candidates are strongly advised to obtain application forms well in advance of this date. The Scholarship Committee will conduct interviews of short-listed candidates in London in May and results will be announced in June.
