Philippe Wiener-Maurice Anspach Foundation

FONDATION PHILIPPE WIENER-MAURICE ANSPACH

The purpose of this Belgian Foundation is to promote strong relations between the Université Libre de Bruxelles on the one hand and the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford on the other hand.

This is done in two ways:

(a) Grants may be made to recent graduates (who don't need to have graduated at the time of application) to follow a postgraduate course in any department of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. The scholarships are of particular interest to students who wish to study law, economics or political science with an emphasis on the European Union. The Institut d'études européennes founded in 1963 organises master degrees (diplômes d'études spécialisées (DES)) which must be followed in a year only in European Law, European economics and European political science.

Those students, however, who would be interested in following the D.E.C. (diplômes d'études complémentaires) must be informed that no scholarship is granted for this master degree.

(b) Recent graduates (who need to have graduated at the time of application) and young researchers wishing to begin the preparation of a PhD thesis may apply for a grant to assist them with the cost of research in any department of the Université Libre de Bruxelles for any period not exceeding one year.

Those with such a project in mind should send a letter which would indicate precisely the nature of the project, the name of the promoter in Oxford or Cambridge and, if possible, the name of the person or the department at the Université Libre de Bruxelles who would provide facilities and necessary assistance.

All candidates must have a good knowledge of spoken and written French, if necessary attested by a certificate.

Four to six awards are available for the academic year 1999-2000. The value of the awards, whether fellowships or scholarships, will be at least 540,000 Belgian francs, payable in twelve months by instalments. Universities fees will be paid directly by the Foundation. The Grants are tenable for one year and are in principle not renewable.

Application forms for the Foundation and further information may be obtained from The Registry, The Old Schools, University of Cambridge CB2 1TN and should be returned by 5 January 1999.
