Philosophical Society

On Monday, 9 November 1998, at 8.30 p.m. in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site, Professor Enrico Coen, FRS, of the John Innes Centre, Norwich, will deliver a lecture entitled The art of genes: how flowers make themselves. All who are interested are invited. There will be a short business meeting before the lecture.

At a meeting held on 19 October 1998 in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site, Dr A. J. Munro, President, was in the Chair. Professor D. A. King, FRS, delivered the Larmor Lecture entitled Solid surfaces: the Devil's invention or palette for technological revolution? A vote of thanks to the speaker was moved by Lord Butterfield, FRCP.

At a meeting held on 26 October 1998 in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site, Dr A. J. Munro, President, was in the Chair. Dr A. W. F. Edwards, of Gonville and Caius College, delivered a lecture entitled Dr Venn and his diagrams. A vote of thanks to the speaker was moved by Professor Sir Sam Edwards, FRS.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on Monday, 26 October 1998 in the Arts School, Bene't Street at 4.30 p.m. Dr A. J. Munro, President, was in the Chair.

1. The Treasurer presented the audited accounts for the period January to December 1997.
2. The following Officers and Members of the Council were elected for the year 1999

President: Dr A. J. Munro

President-Elect: Professor A. Howie

Vice-Presidents: Professor T. M. Cox, Professor M. F. Ashby, Professor J. S. Parker

Treasurer: Dr A. V. Edwards

Secretaries: Dr A. M. Campbell (Physical), Professor J. D. Mollon (Biological), Dr J. M. E. Hyland (Mathematical)

Ordinary Members of the Council who continue: Dr B. T. Grenfell, Professor D. G. Crighton, Professor M. Ashburner, Dr M. A. Tester, Dr C. L.-H. Huang, Sir Sam Edwards, Professor A. P. Dowling

New Ordinary Members of Council: Professor J. E. Field, Dr D. Husain, Dr R. G. Boutilier, Professor P. Gray, Dr D. B. Norman

3. Twenty Fellows were elected and two were re-elected. It was reported that since the last Annual General Meeting nine Fellows had died and 209 had resigned.
4. Messrs Peters Elworthy and Moore were appointed to act as Auditors for the year 1998.

ONE-DAY MEETING

A one-day meeting on Nanotechnology will be held in the Pippard Lecture Theatre, Cavendish Laboratory on Monday, 7 December 1998, starting at 10 a.m. This will be an interdisciplinary meeting open to all members of the University. The meeting will be introduced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Alec Broers, FRS, FEng. and the speakers are Professor H. Ahmed, FEng., Professor B. F. G. Johnson, FRS, Dr K. Nakazato, Professor C. J. Humphreys, Dr J. A. C. Bland, Professor H. Guckel, Dr J. K. Gimzewski, Professor R. E. Palmer, and Dr M. E. Welland.

Applications should be made in writing to Miss J. M. W. Thomas, Executive Secretary, Cambridge Philosophical Society, Bene't Street, Cambridge, CB2 3PY, for the full programme. The first 120 Fellows of the Society to apply will be offered free lunch.
