Girton College

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

Applications are invited for Research Fellowships tenable from 1 October 1999 for three years, to be held in any subject. The College normally awards two Fellowships each year, one in the Arts and one in the Sciences. These are open to graduates of any university with no age limit, but are intended to support those at a very early stage in their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to candidates who have recently completed their Ph.D. or are close to completion. The competition involves assessment of selected candidates' submitted work and, for those short-listed, an interview. Those interested should note that the standard needed to progress to the later stages of the competition is extremely high. Overseas candidates should also note that the College cannot be responsible for payment of air fares should they be short-listed for interview.

The emoluments of a Fellowship are reviewed annually. From 1 October 1998 the stipend is £10,055 a year for a Fellow who has not proceeded to the Ph.D. Degree and £12,625 a year, rising by two annual increments to £13,295 a year, for a post-Ph.D. Fellow. Additional benefits include residence at moderate charge or a living-out allowance of £1,270. Research expenses up to a total of £1,460 over the three years of the Fellowship may be paid.

The closing date for applications is Monday, 28 September 1998 for those applying for either an Arts subject or a Science subject. Selected candidates will be invited to submit work in mid-October, and final interviews will take place in late November.

Further particulars and application forms (please state whether Arts or Science required) are available from the Secretary to the Research Fellowship, Girton College, Cambridge, CB3 0JG.
