Natural Sciences Tripos, Part II, Plant Sciences

The regulation for the subject Plant Sciences in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos has been amended as set out below. The purpose of these amendments is (a) to discontinue the requirement for candidates to offer an English essay in the examination and to replace it by an essay to be submitted before the examination, and (b) to reduce the amount of project work required of candidates. The regulations for the Natural Sciences Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 358) have been amended, with effect from 1 October 1998, as follows:

Regulation 29.
By deleting the asterisk attached to the subject Plant Sciences.

Regulation 32.
By amending the paragraph relating to Plant Sciences so as to read:

Plant Sciences. Each candidate shall

(a) offer four written papers of three hours each;

(b) submit to the Examiners, not later than the fourth day of Full Easter Term, an essay of not more than 2,500 words (excluding tables, figure legends, and bibliography) on a subject chosen by the candidate from a list of approved subjects announced by the Head of the Department not later than the division of the Michaelmas Term;

(c) submit to the Examiners, not later than the fourth day of Full Easter Term, a report of a research project, of not more than 5,000 words (excluding tables, figure legends, appendices, and bibliography), on a subject chosen by the candidate from a list of approved subjects announced by the Head of the Department not later than the division of the Michaelmas Term.

The Examiners shall have power

(i) if they consider that an essay or a report is not sufficiently legible, to require that it be resubmitted in typescript;
(ii) at their discretion to examine a candidate viva voce.
