Gonville and Caius College

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

Gonville and Caius College gives notice of its intention to elect in 1999 to a number of Research Fellowships, open to both men and women, to be held in any subject. Candidates should be graduates of, or research students in, a university in the British Isles and should not have been engaged in full-time postgraduate research for longer than four years, or the equivalent in part-time research, by 1 October 1998. The Fellowships will be tenable for four years from 1 October 1999. Research Fellows are not permitted to undertake paid work or to hold any other appointment, award, or emolument, without the consent of the College Council; but permission is usually given for a limited amount of College teaching and for occasional lecturing and examining. Research Fellows are expected to spend the tenure of their Fellowship in Cambridge and to contribute to the life of the College. Permission may be granted for periods of research away from Cambridge. The College should be consulted in cases where a candidate proposes to defer taking up an award until after 1 October 1999.

The stipend of a Research Fellow who has no other emoluments except from College teaching and who is resident in College is at present £11,845 a year, rising by three annual increments to £13,300. An additional £1,712 is paid to a Research Fellow who is non-resident and a further allowance of £862 is payable in respect of a first child. The stipend is subject to review.

A Research Fellow will receive the normal privileges of a Fellow, including the provision of rooms and some meals and, if non-resident, a housing allowance or assistance with a mortgage loan. Reimbursement of certain research expenses will also be available.

Further particulars and application forms must be obtained via http://www.cai.cam.ac.uk/, or from the Master's Secretary, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, CB2 1TA (e-mail master@cai.cam.ac.uk, fax 01223 332336). Telephone enquiries will not be taken, and we cannot send out particulars by fax. Completed applications must be received on paper, not electronically, by Friday, 13 November 1998.
