Computer Laboratory

TEMPORARY LECTURER OR ASSISTANT LECTURER

A Temporary Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer is required, to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of two years. The duties of this fixed-term appointment arise from the absence on unpaid leave of Professor R. M. Needham and Dr S. A. Crosby. Candidates should have research interests in aspects of the design and engineering of computing systems. The person appointed will be expected to teach central subjects in Computer Science in addition to his or her own speciality.

The salary will be at an appropriate point on the scale for University Lecturers (£19,371-£29,875 a year, currently under review) or University Assistant Lecturers (£16,045-£21,016 a year, also currently under review), with a single increment after the first year.

Current research activities of the Computer Laboratory can be found on the World Wide Web (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/).

Further particulars may be obtained from Mrs Margaret Levitt, Departmental Secretary, Computer Laboratory, New Museums Site, Pembroke Street, Cambridge CB2 3QG. Applications, including a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and the names and addresses (preferably also e-mail addresses) of two referees, should be sent to Mrs Levitt so as to arrive not later than 29 July 1998.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATES IN SELF-TIMED LOGIC

Two Research Associates are required to work on a three-year EPSRC-funded project considering the design of self-timed micro-controllers. This forms part of the University's continuing investigation into self-timed logic. The project will investigate the design of low-power processors, and will also consider the broader issues of CAD tools for simulation and synthesis of self-timed architectures, together with associated compiler technology.

Candidates should ideally have a relevant Ph.D. in Computer Science or Electronic Engineering, or appropriate commercial experience combined with a good first degree. They should have an interest in processor architecture and a detailed knowledge of digital design and electronic computer-aided design, with experience of custom ASIC and FPGA design. Experience in the design and synthesis of self-timed circuits would be an obvious advantage.

Salary will be in the range £15,159-£21,016 a year, depending on age and qualifications.

Further information is available from http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/Rainbow/projects/selftimed.html, or can be obtained from Dr Peter Robinson (e-mail pr@cl.cam.ac.uk).

Applications, including a current curriculum vitae and the names of at least two referees, should be sent to Miss H. E. Sondermann, Computer Laboratory, New Museums Site, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QG, so as to arrive not later than Friday, 31 July 1998.

TEMPORARY RESEARCH ASSISTANT

The Systems Research Group of the Computer Laboratory has a one-year vacancy for a Research Assistant. The main duty will be to work on a project developing a high-speed network interface with novel features to expedite network access for applications. The project is in its second year, and is entering the exciting phase of hardware construction and evaluation. Applicants should have plenty of experience with C, and preferably with either network protocol stacks, device driver writing, or logic design for FPGAs.

Salary will be in the range £15,159-£16,927 (currently under review), depending on age and qualifications. The starting date is flexible, between August and October 1998.

Applications, including a current curriculum vitae and the names of at least two referees, should be sent to Miss H. E. Sondermann, Computer Laboratory, New Museums Site, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QG, so as to arrive not later than Wednesday, 5 August 1998.
