Director of Management Information Services

The University wishes to appoint to the office of Director of Management Information Services which has recently been established within the central administration following a review of strategic requirements.

The University is looking for an energetic individual with relevant professional qualifications and experience from inside or outside higher education to lead the development and implementation of the University's management information strategy and to devise and develop the operational plans of the Management Information Services Division.

Terms and conditions will be appropriate to this senior position.

Computer Officer in the Institute of Astronomy

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the Institute of Astronomy to take up appointment as soon as possible. The successful candidate will join a team providing computing support services to over one hundred staff and graduate students. The backbone of the Institute of Astronomy's computing resources is the Cambridge-IoA Starlink node. This distributed environment includes eighty-five Sun/Solaris workstations, approximately the same number of X-terminals, twelve Linux PCs, and a large number of peripherals connected by a site-wide multi-protocol LAN. An Instrumentation Group and several theoretical-astronomy research groups are served by a range of non-Starlink systems, including special-purpose N-Body VME-based hardware. In addition to the astronomical computing there is an administrative network of PCs running Microsoft Windows.

The Site Management Team's responsibilities are wide ranging, including user support, system management, hardware installation, the provision of documentation for users, administration, supporting undergraduate teaching activities, and making purchasing and strategic decisions. The Computer Officer will be an integral part of the Site Management Team (comprising four full-time staff) and will participate in the support of the Institute's computing systems as a whole. Site-wide IT strategy is governed by a committee of academic and technical staff that will include this postholder.

The successful candidate will have a degree in a scientific discipline, programming and/or system management experience in a UNIX environment (preferably Solaris or Linux), and a technical knowledge of networking. The ability to interact effectively with both novice and experienced user is essential. An astronomical background and experience with Starlink and other major astronomical packages would be an advantage. The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, grade II is £21,894 a year rising by four annual increments to £25,552.

Assistant Treasurer (VAT Officer)

Assistant Treasurer in the Finance Division of the University Offices, to take up appointment as soon as possible. Reporting to the Principal Assistant Treasurer, the person taking up this newly created post will be responsible for the overall management and administration of VAT throughout the University. Particular emphasis is placed in the first instance on leading a team to carry out a comprehensive review of all University activities in relation to VAT. Other initial objectives include the dissemination of information and advice to Departments with regard to VAT- related matters and liaison with the Commitment Accounting Working Group. An appropriate professional qualification and/or technical experience is essential and previous experience of the education sector would be an advantage. The appointment will be for an initial period of three years (unless this requirement is waived by the Council), with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Treasurer is £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875 (pay award pending).
