Stipends of the holders of clinical academic offices and payments for clinical responsibility: Notice

Agreement has now been reached on increases in clinical salaries for 1998. Following a recent meeting of the Board of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association, the Clinical Academic Staff Salaries Committee have agreed to translate the recent award of the Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration into the salaries of clinical academic staff. This gives an increase of 2.35 per cent for all staff from 1 April 1998, with a further 2.2 per cent from 1 December 1998.

In accordance with the principle that the remuneration of clinical academic staff in Cambridge should be broadly comparable with that of equivalent staff in other UK medical schools, the General Board have agreed to approve revised stipends and scales of stipends, as follows:

With effect from
1 April 1998
With effect from
1 December 1998
Clinical Lecturer £22,040 by ten
increments to
£22,510 by ten
increments to
Associate Dean in the Faculty of Clinical Medicine1 £21,018 £21,469
Clinical Dean in the Faculty of Clinical Medicine1 £26,273 £26,836
Regional Postgraduate Dean in the Faculty of Clinical Medicine £57,800 £59,040
Directors and Assistant Directors of Studies in General Practice2 £5,255 £5,367

The Board have also approved the following basis for calculating rates of payment for clinical responsibility for University officers with honorary NHS contracts as Consultants:

If the honorary Consultant contract agreed with the NHS covers not less than six NHS sessions a week, the annual pensionable payment for clinical responsibility will amount to the difference between the officer's prime stipend and his or her notional place on the NHS full-time Consultant salary scale. That scale is:

With effect from 1 April 1998: £44,780, £48,035, £51,290, £54,545, £57,800.

With effect from 1 December 1998: £45,740, £49,065, £52,390, £55,715, £59,040.
