Director of University Biomedical Support Services

Director of University Biomedical Support Services, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Director will be the Certificate holder for the University's designated premises for regulated procedures under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, and will be responsible for ensuring that the requirements of the Act are met within the University. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable stipend will be not less than the level of the Cambridge Professorial stipend, depending on experience and qualifications.

University Lecturers in the Department of Plant Sciences

Two University Lecturers in the Department of Plant Sciences to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter.

1. Lecturer in Plant Cell Biology. Preference will be given to candidates using modern microscopical techniques allied with plant molecular biology to study plant development or function.

2. Lecturer in Plant Molecular Genetics. Candidates should be using genetical and molecular approaches to study fundamental problems in any area of plant science, but preference will be given to those who can interface with the Department's existing areas of interest.

The appointments will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.

University Lecturers in the Department of Surgery

Two University Lecturers in the Department of Surgery. The Appointments Committee concerned hope soon to be in a position to appoint to these offices. Applications are sought from candidates whose sub-speciality interests encompass transplant surgery. Candidates with an additional clinical interest are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicants, who will be recommended for honorary consultant contracts with the Addenbrooke's NHS Trust, will be required to undertake teaching, research, and clinical work. One office is funded under NASCA and will be appointed fixed-term for five years. The other will be appointed for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875 a year. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer. The successful candidates will be eligible to receive an additional payment for clinical responsibility related to the amount of clinical work undertaken. If, as expected, the Lecturers undertake the equivalent of six or more NHS sessions a week of clinical work, the payment will be such as to bring their total pensionable emoluments into line with a point on the NHS salary scale for consultants (£43,750-£56,470).

University offices in the Department of Engineering

The Appointments Committee concerned hope soon to be in a position to appoint to these offices and are seeking to make appointments in the fields listed below.
University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers

Three University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers to take up appointment from dates to be determined. The persons appointed will be expected to play their part in the general teaching of the four-year course leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees.

(i) Engineering Design: the person appointed will be expected to teach in all four years of the undergraduate course, focusing on engineering design courses and projects, though contributions to other subjects will be encouraged; and to lead research projects in the Engineering Design Centre. Preference will be given to candidates who have specialist knowledge of design methods and computer-aided design. Experience of one or more of the following would be an advantage: preparing design research proposals; managing collaborative projects with industry; and engineering design practice.

(ii) Civil Engineering: preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates with a good record of active research in structures and/or surveying/GPS. The person appointed will be expected to contribute strongly to teaching in both structural engineering and surveying.

(iii) Experimental Fluid Mechanics: preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates with a record of excellence in research. The person appointed will be an able and enthusiastic experimentalist committed to research in a challenging area of fluid mechanics and teaching in fluid mechanics and aerodynamics.

Appointments will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age of the person appointed, and will be for three years or five years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment after three years for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

Senior Language Teaching Officer

Senior Language Teaching Officer to take up appointment from 1 September 1998. The person appointed will become the Director of the Department's Language Unit. The Department, through its Language Unit, offers courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Director will be expected to: (i) be responsible for delivery of the Unit's academic programme and its day-to-day administration; (ii) lead development of the Unit's academic programme (for example, offering further languages, such as Japanese) in association with the University's Language Centre; (iii) teach French during Full Term. The successful candidate is likely to be a qualified linguist, to have wide experience of language teaching at an appropriate level, and to have a higher degree. The appointment will be for up to five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.
Senior Language Teaching Officer: £19,371 a year, rising by nine annual increments to £27,985.

Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Land Economy

Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Land Economy, in rural economics, to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. An interest in agri-environmental modelling would be an advantage, but applications are not restricted to this area. The person appointed will have an established record of research and publication. Although the main emphasis will be on research, some contribution to graduate supervision and teaching in the Department will be expected. The appointment will be for a period of up to five years, with the possibility of reappointment subject to the availability of funding.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Director of Research is £19,371 a year rising by ten annual increments to £27,985.

Assistant to the Careers Advisers in the University Careers Service

Assistant to the Careers Advisers in the University Careers Service (Information Services Manager), to take up appointment on 1 July 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Careers Service's extensive range of services to current students, older graduates, employers, Departments, and Colleges is changing and improving all the time. An Information Services Manager is now needed to manage a team of four and, as part of the Service's IT group, to further develop the integration of electronic and paper-based systems within its extensive careers resources. The successful candidate will have a degree and experience of managing both information provision and people. He or she will have good communication and organizational skills, empathy with all our users, be adept at coping with pressure (over 3,000 students a week at peak times), be imaginative, and be equally happy to cope with library routine. Competence in Microsoft Office applications is essential and an interest in the Internet desirable. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Assistant to the Careers Advisers who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant to the Careers Advisers is £21,016 a year, rising by five annual increments to £25,552.

Secretary of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine

Secretary of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine to take up appointment on 1 October 1998. The Secretary will act also as Secretary of the Faculty Board. The main responsibilities of this role are to manage the administrative functions of this large and complex Department, with delegated authority from the Head of Department for the management of the Department's resources. The Secretary will also advise and support the Head of Department, Chairman of the Faculty Board, and other academic staff on administrative and financial matters. In addition to overseeing the administration of the Department, the Secretary will carry out many of the day-to-day administrative tasks and will, therefore, need to develop detailed knowledge of all aspects of the Department's activities, which include: the Clinical Veterinary Course; the Veterinary Hospital; the Centre for Veterinary Science and other research elements; the Postgraduate School in Veterinary and Biomedical Science. Candidates should be educated to degree level. They must possess good communication and management skills and be flexible and well organized. Previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post is essential, preferably in a higher education establishment with a research grant portfolio. Appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for the Secretary of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine is £21,016 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,269.
