University offices: Vacancies

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer in Veterinary Microbiology

University Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine in Veterinary Microbiology to take up appointment from 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be expected to develop research and teaching programmes in bacterial diseases of animals. As a result of recent appointments in microbiology the Department now has considerable strength in infectious disease and immunity and was 'starred' in this area in the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise. The Lecturer will be expected to assume responsibility for formal and practical teaching programmes in bacteriology for veterinary students and will have the opportunity to join an active research group headed by Professor D. Maskell, the Marks & Spencer Professor of Farm Animal Health, Food Science, and Food Safety, within the Centre for Veterinary Science. The research of this group is on enteric pathogens of domestic animals with emphasis on food-borne infections transmissible to man. A veterinary qualification is desirable, but applications will be considered from medical and science graduates. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent higher degree. The appointment will be for three to five years in the first instance, depending on the previous experience of the successful candidate, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.

Further information about the duties and conditions of employment may be obtained from the Secretary of the Appointments Committee for the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0ES, to whom applications (twelve copies), including a curriculum vitae and the names of two or three referees, should be sent so as to reach him not later than Monday, 13 April 1998.

University Lecturer in the Department of Medical Genetics

University Lecturer in the Department of Medical Genetics to take up appointment from 1 July 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Appointments Committee concerned hope soon to be in a position to appoint to this office. Applicants must hold a registrable medical qualification, be Members or Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians (or hold an equivalent postgraduate qualification), have several years' clinical experience in medical genetics, and have active research interests. The successful applicant, who will have clinical responsibilities within the East Anglian Regional Genetics Service based at Addenbrooke's Hospital and be recommended for an honorary consultant contract with the Addenbrooke's NHS Trust, will be required to undertake teaching, research, and clinical work. The appointment will normally be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875 a year. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will be eligible to receive an additional payment for clinical responsibility related to the amount of clinical work undertaken. If, as expected, the Lecturer undertakes the equivalent of six or more NHS sessions a week of clinical work, the payment will be such as to bring his or her total pensionable emoluments into line with a point on the NHS salary scale for consultants (£43,750-£56,470).

Further information may be obtained from the Secretary of the Appointments Committee for the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, Clinical School, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 2SP, to whom applications (fourteen copies), together with a curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, should be sent so as to reach her not later than 8 April 1998.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Computer Laboratory

Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Computer Laboratory to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates for one post should have research interests in aspects of the design and engineering of computing systems. Candidates for the other post should have research interests in aspects of semantic and logical models, computer languages, and computer-assisted reasoning. Those appointed will be expected to teach central subjects in Computer Science in addition to their own specialities.

Current research activities of the Computer Laboratory can be found on the WWW at http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/

The appointments will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the persons appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.
