Honorary Degrees, 1998: Notice of a ballot

2 March 1998

The Graces for the conferment of Honorary Degrees in 1998 were published in the Reporter on 18 February (p. 408). They were submitted to the Regent House at the Congregation held on 21 February, with the exception of Grace 1, for the conferment of the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law on Dr Helmut Kohl, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, in respect of which notice of Non placet had been received on 20 February, and which was withdrawn by the Vice-Chancellor at the Congregation, under the provisions of Regulation 22 for Graces and Congregations of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 115). The Council are now resubmitting this Grace to the Regent House (Grace 4, p. 463), and have determined that a vote is to be taken on it by ballot.

In connexion with this ballot, the Registrary will arrange for the printing and circulation of any fly-sheet, signed by ten or more members of the Regent House, which reaches him by 1 p.m. on Thursday, 12 March. Fly-sheets must bear, against each signature, the name and initials (in block capitals) of the signatory (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 117).

In accordance with Regulation 13 for Graces and Congregations of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 114), the ballot will be conducted by post. Voting papers and fly-sheets will be distributed to all members of the Regent House on or before Friday, 20 March; the last date for the return of voting papers will be Monday, 30 March.
