University offices: Vacancies

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

Applications are invited for the following University offices.

For posts advertised as University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer, the appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.

For posts advertised as Senior Technical Officer or Technical Officer the appointment will be made at either Senior Technical Officer or Technical Officer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, or, for a Senior Technical Officer, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Senior Technical Officer: £19,371 a year, rising by nine annual increments to £27,985
Technical Officer: £16,927 a year, rising by five annual increments to £21,016.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, in any branch of chemical physics, theoretical chemistry, or physical chemistry, to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Appointments Committee concerned hope soon to be in a position to appoint to this office. Preference may be given to candidates whose research complements on-going research in the Department.

Applications (two copies, including a curriculum vitae, and the names and addresses of three referees) should be sent, to be received by 20 March, 1998 to the Secretary of the Appointments Committee, Mr P. Aslin, Institute of Astronomy, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0HA. Candidates on the short list will be called for interview, which it is expected will be held in Cambridge in late April.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Earth Sciences (Re-advertisement)

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Earth Sciences to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are deliberately advertising this post over a wide area of the subject. We are interested in receiving applications from those whose research bears on any aspect of the following broad areas: sedimentary geology; seismic stratigraphy; basin dynamics; low temperature geochemistry; atmosphere-ocean modelling; or the application of physics to these and other large scale geological processes (such as Milankovitch coupling, the use of earthquakes and geodesy to study the formation of basins and mountain belts, the fluid dynamics of sedimentation, the use of remote sensing to study the geology of the Earth and other planets, and a range of other topics.)

Ten copies of a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a 1,000 word statement of current and intended research directions, and the names, postal and e-mail addresses of three referees should be sent to the Administrator, Department of Earth Sciences, Downing Street, Cambridge, CB2 3EQ, by 30 April 1998. Senior Technical Officer or Technical Officer in the Department of Anatomy

Senior Technical Officer or Technical Officer in the Department of Anatomy, to take up appointment as soon as possible, as Animal Facilities Manager and as the Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer for the animal facility of the Departments of Anatomy and Biochemistry. The Animal Facilities Manager will be responsible for the management of the animal facility, including oversight of both finance and facilities, and animal care. Applicants should have a minimum qualification of M.I.A.T. or R.An.Tech., and F.I.A.T. is desirable. The Manager will also be involved in the rebuilding of the animal facility for the Departments of Biochemistry, Experimental Psychology, and Physiology, will oversee the commissioning, and may be expected to manage the facility when it is commissioned.

Assistant Treasurer (Head of the Central Accounting Section) in the Finance Division of the University Offices

The University seeks an accountant, fully qualified or finalist and preferably a graduate, to fill the vacancy of Head of the Central Accounting Section in the Finance Division of the University Offices from 6 April 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. Reporting to the Principal Assistant Treasurer, the successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management of a busy area concerned with central and departmental accounts and, in addition, Trust Funds, Final Accounts, Treasury Management, Taxation, and VAT matters. Appropriate management and accounting experience is essential. The appointment is graded Assistant Treasurer and will be made for an initial period of three years, unless that requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Treasurer is £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
