Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics

Applications are invited for two posts in the Centre.

Senior/Research Associate in Psychology

The applicant will be expected to have a good first degree in Psychology and a Ph.D. in some aspect of cognitive psychology, ideally related to language processing or learning.

The person appointed to this post will be expected to undertake research in a research project, under the direction of Dr John Williams, in an area to be determined (in processes of language comprehension and/or processes of (first and) second language learning). The SRA will be expected to be able to work independently, to be familiar with the relevant theoretical literature, and to be competent in experimental design and statistical techniques. He or she will be expected to develop hypotheses, to procure subjects, to devise and perform experiments, and to write up the results in publishable form.

There may be an opportunity to undertake some lecturing on the psychological processes of language production and comprehension, and language learning, at M.Phil. level (no more than eighteen hours a year). The SRA will be expected to play a full part in double-marking essays and examinations, and in organizing and attending departmental seminars and workshops.

Senior/Research Associate in Pragmatics

The applicant will be expected to have a good first degree in Linguistics and a Ph.D. in some aspect of semantics/pragmatics.

The person appointed to this post will be expected to undertake research in a research project, under the direction of Professor Gillian Brown, in an area to be determined (in the general area of context and language use; in particular how different types of referring expression enable the relevant context to be identified). The SRA will be expected to be able to work independently, to be familiar with the relevant theoretical literature, and to be prepared to develop experimental formats to elicit particular language use. He or she will be expected to develop hypotheses, to procure subjects, to devise and perform experiments, and to write up the results in publishable form.

There may be an opportunity to undertake some lecturing in the area of semantics, pragmatics, and discourse analysis at M.Phil. level (no more than eighteen hours a year). The SRA will be expected to play a full part in double-marking essays and examinations, and in organizing and attending departmental seminars and workshops.

The pensionable scale of stipends for each post is £15,159 (at age twenty-five) to £25,525 a year for a Research Associate, and £19,371 (at age thirty) to £27,985 a year for a Senior Research Associate. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance.
