University identity card: Notice
The Council have under consideration the introduction of a University-wide card. It has been agreed that the first use of the card should be to confirm the holder as a member or employee of the University or of one of the Colleges, or to provide identification in the case of visitors such as short-term academic visitors. Added to this function would be confirmation of entitlement to use certain facilities. These could include:
- use of the University Library
- access to buildings (Departments and/or College)
- simple cashless purchases, e.g. catering, photocopying, faxing
- access to car parks
- use of University Computing Service facilities
- use of the University Centre
The Council are aware that card systems based on several different technologies have already been installed in a number of Departments and Colleges. If a Department or College is planning to install a new card-entry system, it should contact the University Security Adviser at the Safety Office (tel. 32839) in the first instance to ensure that the new system is compatible with the proposed University card.
