Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, Part II, 1998: Notice

The Faculty Board of Divinity have further amended their Notice of special subjects and prescribed texts for the Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, Part II, in 1998 (Reporter, 1995-96, p. 869, and 1996-97, p. 243) in respect of Paper 27. The special subjects for this paper will now be as follows:

Paper 27. The study of religions II

 A. The concept of the legal system (Halakhah) in medieval and modern Judaism.

 B. Either Universalism and Particularism in Islam or Sufism.

 The Faculty Board give notice that, in the examination to be held in 1998, the form of Paper 27 will be as follows:

 Two separate question papers will be set, numbered 27A and 27B.

 Paper 27A will be devoted to Judaism; the form of this paper will be as in 1997.

 Paper 27B will be devoted to Islam. This paper will be divided into three sections. Section A will contain at least twelve questions on the life, thought, and worship of Islam. Section B will contain at least nine questions on Universalism and Particularism in Islam. Section C will contain at least nine questions on Sufism. Candidates will be required to confine their answers to two sections, either Sections A and B or Sections A and C. Four questions should be attempted, including at least one from Section A and at least two from either Section B or Section C.

 The Faculty Board are satisfied that no candidate's preparation for the examination in 1998 is adversely affected by these changes.
