Assessment of research: Notice

Following the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise, the Higher Education Funding Council for England have circulated a consultation paper to universities and other institutions, seeking views on the way in which future assessments of the quality of research should be carried out; the paper contains a number of questions on which institutions are invited to comment.

The General Board, in consultation with Faculty Boards and Heads of Departments, are currently preparing a response on behalf of the University to this enquiry. Individual members of the Regent House who wish to contribute to the University's response are invited to submit comments to Faculty Boards; such comments should be sent to the Secretary of the relevant Faculty Board not later than Tuesday, 13 January 1998.

A copy of the HEFCE's paper (entitled 'Research Assessment: Consultation'; reference RAE 2/97) is available for consultation in the University Registry. It is also available on the World Wide Web (http://www.niss.ac.uk/education/hefc/rae/2_97.html).
