Philosophical Society

At a meeting held on 24 November 1997 in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site, Dr A. J. Munro, President-elect, was in the Chair.

 Sixty-four Fellows were elected and two were re-elected. (During 1997 a total of 197 Fellows have been elected and eleven have been re-elected.)

 Dr G. F. Gilmore, of the Institute of Astronomy, delivered a lecture entitled It's a Universe captain, but not as we know it. A vote of thanks was moved by Professor G. P. Efstathiou.

 Research Studentships have been awarded to Mr P. J. C. Brown, EM, Mr A. C. Buton, EM, Mr S. Chakrabarty, G, Mr M. T. D. Cooper G, Mr J. Geng, DAR, Miss D. Gilgen, LC, Mr C. G. Glaister, DAR, Mr W. Hu, K, Mr I. Jenkins, R, Mr C.-P., Liu, DAR, Miss C. A. Ovenston W, Miss C. Robinson, K, Miss J. M. Stigter, N, and Miss L. Tang, CHU. Travel Grants amounting to £1,600 have been awarded to Fellows of the Society.
