The Orator made the following speech when presenting Mr Petty to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for the Honorary Degree of Master of Arts:
STUDIORUM in quibus adulta moramur aetate quis dicat originem? huic uiro modo tris annos nato data per tabellarios dum procul domo feriatus abest tabula erat quae sedis patriae similitudinem uiae expressam in se ferebat: quam tabulam iam fere quinquaginta post annos conseruat. mox lapides noua forma inuenti num Romanorum fuissent petebat; responsum est aliter, sed iam puero notum est gentem illam in loco quondam uersari, fierique posse ut aliquid reliquissent rerum ibi gestarum testimonium. |
iuuenis e paludibus profectus in huius urbis bibliotheca publica munus inire ausus est; raro tam feliciter conuenere cuilibet uitae cursus et cura. inuenit enim in bibliotheca antiquius in duobus armariis congesta monumenta scriptorum unde memoriae tradi possent dicta et facta eorum qui pagos uicinitatesque urbis habitauerant. non tum quidem multa erant numero, sed illecebris studenti abundabant. quae primum in ordinem redegit, tum ceteris aperiebat. |
MICHAELEM IACOBVM PETTY. |
1 Aeschylus Agamemnon 992-3.
THE interests of our adult lives can sometimes be traced back a long way. When Michael Petty was three years old, and away from home on holiday, he was sent a postcard. The picture on it showed a street scene of his own native village. Nearly fifty years later he still preserves that card. Then he came across some stones of unusual shape, and asked if they were Roman. The answer was no; yet even as a child he knew that Romans had once been active in the area, and might well have left behind such a relic of their achievements. |
Michael Petty is a fenboy. He came to Cambridge as a youth to take up a job in the Public Library. Seldom can anyone's interest and occupation have overlapped to such advantage. In the Library, heaped up in two cupboards, he found an ageing collection of docu-ments; in them was a record waiting to be published of the doings and sayings of those who had lately lived in the city and its surrounding villages. At the time it was not a plentiful store, but for an enthusiast it was full of fascination. First he sorted it out, and then he made it available to the rest of us. |
That was no small task. But the toil of it was matched by an ever keener and chiefly self-taught understanding. Eventually he set up eighteen headings under which to gather the material and to index it for reference. Meantime the Petty campaign had begun: what further treasures, of every sort, were out there lying low? He made his quest known all round the county, travelling himself to every corner and stirring people's memories, and even in retirement he continues the work, fired still by the same passion for our past. |
Many in the University acknowledge their gratitude to him, and so do many in our schools; he has helped all comers with equal enthusiasm. A learned man from Arpinum who deserved well of his country was once honoured with a toga of purple stripe by the Senate and people of Rome; so we for honour's sake bestow a Master's gown upon a scholar from Stretham who has deserved well of his village and his county, |
MICHAEL JAMES PETTY, |
lately Curator of the Cambridgeshire Collection. |
