Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos, Part IA, Physiology, and Natural Sciences Tripos, Part IA, Physiology

The regulations for the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos and the Natural Sciences Tripos have been amended as set out below. The purpose of these amendments is to introduce an additional element into the examination requirements for the subject Physiology in Part IA of these Triposes, viz. the submission of records of practical work undertaken by candidates during the year. The Faculty Board of Biology and the Committee for the Natural Sciences Tripos are satisfied that no candidate's preparation for the examinations in 1998 is adversely affected by this change. The regulations have been amended, with immediate effect, as follows:

Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 325)

Regulation 16.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

 16.  (a)  The examinations in Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Pathology shall each consist of one written paper of three hours and a practical examination which may include a viva voce examination. The examination in Physiology shall consist of one written paper of three hours, a practical examination which may include a viva voce examination, and the submission of note-books containing records of practical work. The examination in Medical Genetics shall consist of one written paper of one and a half hours. The questions in all subjects shall be such as to test knowledge of principles rather than of details.

 (b)  Note-books containing records of practical work in Physiology shall be presented for the inspection of the Examiners on the day before the day specified for the beginning of the examinations for Part IA, and shall bear the signature of the teachers under whose direction the work was performed. In assigning marks for the examination, the Examiners may, at their discretion, take account of the note-books submitted by candidates.

Natural Sciences Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 358)

Regulation 16(b).

By deleting in sub-paragraph (i) the subject Physiology.

By inserting the following sub-paragraph after sub-paragraph (iv):

(v) one written paper of three hours, a practical examination, and the submission of note-books containing records of practical work:

  Physiology.

The supplementary regulations for the subject Physiology in these two examinations (Statutes and Ordinances, pp. 329 and 371) have also been amended, with immediate effect, as follows:

By amending the first sentence, in each case, so as to read: 'The written paper will test candidates' knowledge of core factual material and their understanding of the broad principles of physiology.'
