EVAN LEWIS-THOMAS LAW STUDENTSHIPS, 1998-99

The Governing Body of Sidney Sussex College offers annually, for men and women who are not already members of the College, a number of Evan Lewis-Thomas Law Studentships for research or advanced courses in Law or cognate subjects in the University of Cambridge. If candidates of sufficient merit present themselves, elections will next be made in May 1998. Under the terms of the will of the late Judge Evan Lewis-Thomas, candidates must have shown proficiency in Law and Jurisprudence, usually, but not necessarily, by obtaining a university degree in Law by August 1998. Normally, they must be or become candidates for the Ph.D. Degree, the Diploma in Legal Studies, the Diploma in International Law, the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) in Criminology, or the LL.M. Degree. Candidates for the Ph.D. Degree who apply for these Studentships may also apply for Research Studentships offered by the College.

These Studentships, which are subject to reviews of diligence and progress, are tenable for one year in the first instance but may be renewed annually up to a maximum of three years. Their value will depend on the candidate's needs in the light of support from other sources and on the availability of income from the Evan Lewis-Thomas Fund. All holders of Studentships will receive at least £1,000 a year, but Studentships of larger value, up to full support of fees (at the 'Home' rate) and maintenance, may be awarded.

Election to a Studentship may be made conditional upon satisfactory results in degree examinations and is in all cases conditional upon the person elected being accepted by the Board of Graduate Studies if he or she is a candidate for the Ph.D. Degree, the M.Phil. Degree, or a Diploma, or by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Law if he or she is a candidate for the LL.M. Degree. Application for acceptance by the Board or the Degree Committee is made through the Board under the Cambridge Intercollegiate Graduate Application Scheme (C.I.G.A.S.), 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RZ, England. In electing to Studentships, first consideration will be given to candidates who nominate Sidney Sussex as their College of first preference on C.I.G.A.S. Form A. Preference will be given to candidates who will be under twenty-six years of age on 1 October 1998, though special circumstances (e.g. military service) can be taken into account.

An application form for these Studentships may be obtained from the Tutor for Graduate Students, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU, England. Completed applications must reach him not later than 1 February 1998. An elected Student will be required to come into residence as a member of the College in October 1998. It is normally possible to provide a room in College or in one of the College's hostels for a single person. A College flat may be available for a married person.

HOWARD RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP

The Governing Body of Sidney Sussex College offers, from the bequest of the late Mr B. A. Howard, a Research Studentship commencing in October 1998. The holder of the Studentship must be, or seek to be, a candidate for the degree of Ph.D. in the University of Cambridge. The Studentship is tenable in any subject and is open to men or women from any country.

The holder of the Studentship must have graduated by August 1998, and election to the Studentship may be made conditional upon satisfactory results in degree examinations. The Studentship is intended for candidates who have already been awarded, or are likely to graduate with, First Class Honours or the equivalent. Election is in all cases conditional upon the person elected being accepted by the Board of Graduate Studies of the University. Application for acceptance by the Board is made through the Cambridge Intercollegiate Graduate Application Scheme (C.I.G.A.S.), 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2 1RZ, England. In the competition for the Studentship, first consideration will be given to candidates who nominate Sidney Sussex as their College of first choice on CIGAS Form A. Preference will be given to candidates who will be under twenty-six years of age on 1 October 1998, though special circumstances will be taken into account.

The Studentship is subject to reviews of diligence and progress, and is renewable annually up to a maximum of three years. The Studentship will meet the cost of University and College fees. The level of maintenance payments will be determined after considering the successful candidate's income from other sources. The holder of the Studentship will receive at least £1000 per annum, and a Student without income from other sources would receive full support (£5190 per annum in the current year, and subject to annual review). In addition, the Student may apply for support for approved research expenses up to £350 per annum.
