The Managers of the Richard Kahn Fund, the Faculty Board of Economics and Politics, give notice that they intend to proceed to an election to one or more Kahn Research Studentships or Teaching Assistantships, which will be tenable for one year from 1 October 1998 or another date determined by the Managers, and may be renewable for a second or third year. The value of the Studentships or Teaching Assistantships will be not more than £5,000 p.a.
A candidate must be or about to be registered as a Graduate Student in the University, to undertake advanced study or research in the Faculty of Economics and Politics. A person appointed as a teaching assistant shall in addition undertake teaching duties up to 6 hours per week (including preparation time).
By the terms of the bequest, one award each year shall be open only to persons who are citizens of the USA, so applications from American citizens are particularly invited, and will receive special attention.
Applications, including an up-to-date curriculum vitae and names of two referees, (one of whom should be the research supervisor) should be sent to the Administrative Officer, Graduate Studies, Faculty of Economics & Politics, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DD, to arrive no later than 10 April 1998.
Members of the University in statu pupillari who are or intend to be candidates for the Economics Tripos and Graduate Students undertaking advanced study or research in the field of Political Economy are invited to apply to the Managers of the Suzy Paine Fund for a grant towards the cost of travel to and in Asia in connexion with their studies.
An application must fully explain the purpose for which a grant is needed and must include a statement of likely expenses and of any other sources of assistance to which application has been made, together with the name and address of at least one referee familiar with the applicant's academic work who has been asked to write direct to the Faculty Secretary. Applications and references should reach the Faculty Secretary, Faculty of Economics and Politics, Austin Robinson Building, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 9DD, by 1 May 1998. Successful applicants will be required to submit to the Managers a brief written report on their return.
The Managers of the Wrenbury Scholarship Fund give notice that they intend to proceed to an election to one or more Wrenbury Scholarships in Political Economy, which will be tenable for one year from 1 October 1998 or another date determined by the Managers.
The Scholar must carry out full-time study and training for research in some branch of economics or political economy, or of economic history subsequent to 1800. The value of the Scholarships will be no more than £4,500 p.a.
A candidate must be or about to be registered as a Graduate Student working under the supervision of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Economics and Politics. Applications, which should contain an up-to-date curriculum vitae, a concise account of the study and training for research which the candidate intends to pursue, and the names of two referees should be sent to the Registrary, at the University Registry, The Old Schools, Cambridge, CB2 1TN, so as to reach him not later than 10 April 1998. Candidates should also include a clear statement of what financial support they hope to have in addition to the Scholarship. They should check with the Administrative Officer, Graduate Studies, Faculty or Economics and Politics, Austin Robinson Building, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DD to see whether they can also apply for any teaching assistantships linked to this award.
The announcement of elections to this Scholarship will be made by the third Sunday in July, i.e. 19 July 1998.
