Senior Assistant Treasurer (Head of Pensions Administration) in the Finance Division

The University seeks an experienced professional to fill the vacancy of Head of Pensions Administration in the Finance Division of the University Offices from 1 February 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. Reporting to the Treasurer, the successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management of the Pensions Administration Section, which operates at 10 Peas Hill, Cambridge. Appropriate managerial experience and a professional pensions qualification are essential.

 The appointment is graded Senior Assistant Treasurer and will be for three years, unless that requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable stipend for a Senior Assistant Treasurer is £33,202.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Biological Anthropology

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Biological Anthropology to take up appointment from October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is intended to develop the Department's strength in Skeletal Biology and allied fields (hard tissue research, primate/human evolution). Full details are given in the further particulars. The appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

 The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.

University Lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine

University Lecturer at Consultant Level in General Practice in the Department of Community Medicine to take up appointment on 1 April 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant will be recommended for an honorary consultant contract with the appropriate NHS body. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the general practice contribution to undergraduate education, to research, and to the development of academic capacity in primary care in the Anglia region. The Unit has a reputation for exploring the boundaries of the contribution of primary care to the education of clinical students. We are looking for someone keen to build on this reputation and to lead an established teaching team. Experience in general practice is essential and an interest in developing appropriate collaboration with postgraduate education important. The appointment will normally be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875 a year. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will be eligible to receive an additional payment for clinical responsibility related to the amount of clinical work undertaken. If, as expected, the Lecturer undertakes the equivalent of six or more NHS sessions a week of clinical work the payment will be such as to bring his or her total pensionable emoluments into line with a point on the NHS salary scale for consultants (£43,750-£56,470).

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should have research interests in aspects of the design and engineering of computing systems. The person appointed will be expected to teach central subjects in Computer Science in addition to their own specialities. University Lecturer in the Faculty of Mathematics

University Lecturer in the Departments of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, to take up appointment on 1 April 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is shared equally between the two Departments. Applicants should work in one of the areas of strong interaction between the two Departments; these include Geometry and geometrical aspects of Theoretical Physics, Dynamical Systems and Partial Differential Equations. The appointment will be for three years with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy to take up appointment on 1 October 1998. The person appointed may have research interests in any area of philosophy, but will be expected to teach philosophical logic. The appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

Computer Officer in the University Computing Service

Computer Officer, Grade I or Grade II in the Computing Service, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The successful candidate will work in a small team responsible for the maintenance and development of a network of PCs and Macintoshes (the PWF) supported by a Netware 4.11 server cluster. The PCs currently run under DOS/Windows 3.1, but current plans involve the setting up of one or more classrooms running Windows NT4 workstations. The Central cluster is also accessed via IP tunnel by a number of Novell Networks (the PWF Club). The successful applicant will work under the Manager of the Small Systems Group in one or more of the following main areas; development and support of NTWS clients, support of the server cluster, installation of applications, support of the PWF Club, network infrastructure, support programming. Experience of Netware and Windows (16 and 32 bit versions) is essential, and knowledge of one or more of MacOS, C, and Ethernet will be highly valued. The appointment will be made at either Computer Officer Grade I or Grade II level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scales of stipends for Computer Officers are:

Grade I: £18,494 a year, rising by twelve annual increments to £29,875.
Grade II: £21,894 a year, rising by four annual increments to £25,552.

Computer Officer in the Judge Institute of Management Studies

Computer Officer Grade II in the Judge Institute of Management Studies to play a leading role in the continuing development of the Institute's computing services. The person appointed will be responsible for system management, user support, applications development and testing, and computer strategy and management across the whole range of the Institute's IT services including its electronic library. The successful candidate will be a computing professional with a good degree or equivalent qualification, together with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an established track record in computing support. Technical experience of system management with Netware and/or Windows NT is essential; Unix experience would be desirable. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer Grade II is £21,894 a year, rising by four annual increments to £25,552.

Administrative Officers in the University Offices (Registry Division)

Two Administrative Officers, Grade I/II, to take up appointment in the Registry Division as soon as possible. The Division supports the University Council which is the chief executive and policy-making body of the University. One post will be located in the central Registry: the detailed duties of this post will depend on the qualifications and experience of the person appointed, but are likely initially to include providing support for the work of the newly established Planning and Resources Committee, acting as Secretary of Council Committees and other bodies, and assisting with the general work of the Registry and the Council. The second post will be located in the Student Records and Statistics section: initially the duties of this post will include developing new arrangements for integrating student-number information into the planning and resource-allocation procedures of the University, as well as producing student-number returns for external and internal purposes.

 Applicants should have a degree and an interest in a career in university administration. Some previous experience in university administration may be an advantage. Each appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scales of stipends are as follows: Administrative Officer Grade I, £21,016 a year, rising by five annual increments to £25,552; Administrative Officer Grade II, £17,606 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,785.

University Assistant Radiologist in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine

University Assistant Radiologist in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine to take up appointment on 1 March 1998. The appointed person will be expected to carry out the primary duties related to providing a diagnostic imaging service to the Hospital and to teach undergraduate veterinary students. Training in radiology and other diagnostic imaging techniques will be provided. The successful candidate should hold, or be enrolled for, the Certificate in Veterinary Radiology, or equivalent, and will be expected to study for the Diploma in Veterinary Radiology and/or Membership of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Applicants for the office must have a veterinary degree registrable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment up to a maximum tenure of seven years in total.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Radiologist, is £19,371 a year, rising by four annual increments to £22,785. The scale of stipends is reviewed annually.
